Albert Johnny Kinard, Sr., 89, passed away at his home in Jacksonville, Florida, July 24, 2024, after a ten-month battle with leukemia. He was born May 10, 1935, in Jacksonville, where he remained for his entire life. After graduating from Landon High School in 1954, he went to work with the Army Corps of Engineers. In 1955, he married the love of his life, Mary Louise Green, who he met at Southside Riverside Church. They were married for 68 years. Prior to the consolidation of Duval County and the City of Jacksonville, Kinard began a long and illustrious career with the City of Jacksonville. He worked for five mayors during his 60+ years with the city. During his tenure, he filled many positions including Director of Public Works, Deputy Chief Administrative Officer and Advisor to the Mayor-Director of Special Projects. His years of service left a lasting impression that is still felt today. He was an integral part of securing the 2005 Super Bowl Game in Jacksonville. As an avid Florida Gator fan, Big Al was instrumental in helping to keep the annual Florida/Georgia football game in Jacksonville. Al never believed in the word cannot he always believed, if it was for the betterment of the citizens and the city, it could be done. His favorite hobby was gardening. During his free time, he could be found on his John Deere, enhancing the yard with more plants and flowers. He also enjoyed spending time with his family, listening to Gospel Quartet music, and was famous for his BBQ. Al never met a stranger and one of his most popular attributes was being able to connect with each person he met; and they always walked away better for having made his acquaintance. His quick wit, joke telling, and generous spirit will be missed. His legacy will live forever with his "thumbprint" all over Jacksonville and his many contributions that made Jacksonville what it is today. He is preceded in death by his parents Curtis and Myrtle Kinard, and son-in-law John Mitchell, Jr. He is survived by his loving wife; Mary Louise Green Kinard and his three children Al Kinard, Jr. (Beth), of Jacksonville, Mary Ann Mitchell of Jacksonville, and Carol Kelley (Kevan) of Senoia, Georgia, five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, one brother, five sisters and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held at Holiday Hill Baptist Church, 730 Mandalay Road, Jacksonville, Florida, at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 30. Funeral Service to follow at 11 a.m., with Pastor Albert Byrd officiating. Burial will follow the funeral service at Greenlawn Cemetery, 4300 Beach Blvd., Jacksonville, Florida.
