Albert "Al" Julius Rollins of
Leland, NC passed away peacefully on November 16, 2025 at the age of 89 at Lower Cape Fear Life Care Hospice in Wilmington, NC after a series of illnesses.
He was born on April 18, 1936 at the family farm in Bristow, VA to the late Frank A. Rollins, Sr. & Florence (Whitmer) Rollins. He was one of 15 children. He was preceded in death by a brother, Frank A. Rollins, Jr. and sisters, Claire Eldridge, Anna Mae Martin, Mary Koenig, Doris Downs Inskeep, Gertie Graves and granddaughter, Brittany Meghan Rollins; three half- sisters and two half- brothers. His beloved dogs, Che-Che, Bear, Brandi and Shadow who were his constant companions.
Al leaves behind by his loving wife of 64 years, Carol (Rubin) Rollins; a son, Tony Rollins (Cathy) of Southport, NC; daughter, Cheri Counselman of Southport, NC; Grandchildren, Kaden Edwards (Bradi) of Mooresville, NC, Matthew Counselman of Chantilly, VA, Mellisa Counselman of Arlington, VA , Ashley Bekampis (Michael) of Garner, NC; great granddaughters Parker Meghan Bekampis & Lainey Catherine Bekampis of Garner, NC; sisters, Charlotte Dameron of Falls Church, VA and Barbara Justice of Lovettsville, VA; brother, Eddie Rollins of Manassas, VA; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
He attended Washington-Lee High School in Arlington, VA and served in the United States Army from 1959 to 1961. Upon discharge he worked for A&P Grocery until his retirement in 1989 after 32 years. He liked to say that he was retired longer than he had worked.
Upon retiring, he and his wife moved to Surfside Beach, SC and then to Little River, SC where they enjoyed many happy years before moving to Forest, VA and finally to their current home in
Leland, NC.
The highlight of his summers was the family gatherings at their home in Vienna, VA until retirement, then at his sister Mary's home.
He was a lifelong Washington "Redskins" fan and had season tickets for over 35 years. After retiring he made sure he always had the NFL Sunday Ticket package so that he didn't miss a single game.
He also enjoyed NASCAR and was a fan of Dale Earnhardt, Sr. followed by Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and currently Kyle Larson. He loved being outdoors, playing golf and riding his bicycle until very recently.
