Alberta "Bertie" Ruffin, age 102, passed away peacefully on May 23, 2025. Born on October 13, 1922, in Logan, Missouri, to William and Francis Estes, Bertie lived a full, vibrant life marked by humor, strength, and unwavering love for her family.
A true firecracker to the end, Bertie was known for her unfiltered honesty and sharp wit that could leave a room laughing for days. Her bold personality was as unforgettable as it was endearing, and those who knew her will forever cherish the joy she brought into their lives.
Bertie dedicated many years of her life to caring for others, both in her role as a devoted housekeeper at Pomona Valley Hospital and in the way she supported and nurtured her family across five generations. She found peace and expression in waterpainting, a hobby that reflected the gentler side of her spirited nature.
She is survived by her daughter, Karen Moore and her husband Richard; grandchildren Josh Moore and his wife Jessica, and Tammy Smathers and her husband Chris; great-grandchildren Karissa Smathers, Colleen Munoz, Kody Smathers, Kyle Smathers, Brooke Moore, and Savannah Moore; great-great-granddaughter Magnolia Silva; and her beloved nephew, William "Bill" Estes.
Bertie was preceded in death by her daughter, Sherry Benfield, and granddaughter, Christina Benfield.
Bertie's life was a testament to resilience, laughter, and fierce love. She leaves behind a legacy of unforgettable stories, colorful artwork, and generations of family who carry her fire forward.
A celebration of Bertie's life will be held on Thursday, August 7th at Gentry Griffey Funeral Chapel, 5301 Fountain Road, Fountain City, TN. Receiving of friends will be from 3:00–4:00 PM, with a service to follow from 4:00–5:00 PM. All are welcome to attend.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Bertie by sharing a laugh, speaking your truth, or simply doing something bold-just like she would have. To plant a beautiful memorial tree in memory of Alberta "Bertie", please visit our Tree Store.
