Alberto Piedra Obituary

Swedish Covenant Hospital on April 26, 2025 at the age of 86. He is predeceased by his
loving wife of 30 years, Miriam G. Piedra, his mother, Maria Virginia Sanchez Piedra, and his
father, Alberto Emilio Piedra.
At age 18, he began attending University of Havana in 1956 pursuing psychiatry. After two
years, the university closed during the Cuban Revolution. After being arrested numerous
times as a political prisoner between 1959 and 1960, he immigrated to Chicago with his
wife and daughter, Maria Virginia Piedra in 1967. He continued to advocate for democracy
while living in the U.S. and was always grateful for the opportunities/individual rights his
new home provided him. Alberto was avid reader and collector of literature. He was a
bottomless pit of knowledge and was always happy to dispense that knowledge with
anyone he conversed with.
He is survived by his daughter, his son, Alberto Lazaro Piedra, and five grandchildren,
Rafael Perello, Miriam Perello, Francisco Piedra, Amelia Piedra, Genevieve Piedra.
