Obituary of Alex Anthony Castaneda
Alex Castaneda (70) passed away peacefully on May 13, 2024, at his home surrounded by family and loved ones. Alex leaves behind his wife Debbie, daughter Rickie, and sons Michael (Mindee), Johnie Presley (Stacye) and grandson Logan. Alex was born on May 25, 1953, in Jersey City, NJ to Aurea Marrero and Alex Castaneda before moving to Hollywood, FL. He graduated from McArthur High School where he played football and ran track. He walked on to the football team at Concord College in West Virginia where he proved himself to be a star wide receiver. Shortly after graduation and marriage to Debbie he moved to Ocala, FL where he began his teaching and coaching career. He started at Lake Weir High School and eventually transferred to Vanguard High School and West Port High School then back to Vanguard where he retired. He was awarded West Port High School Teacher of the Year and Golden Apple Teacher in 2001. He always saw the best in people and gave his heart to his students and players. He strived to not only be a teacher, but a mentor in their lives, pushing them to chase their dreams and achieve their goals.
While a champion in the classroom, it was the football field where he left his true legacy. Having been raised by a single mom, Alex took it upon himself to be more than a coach and mentor to his player but also a father figure. His home was always open to all players, and he supported them on every level, taking the time to make sure his players had all the tools they needed to navigate and succeed in life. He took great pride, as many of them became upstanding individuals on and off the field, but most importantly became excellent fathers to their children. He had a great love for family, friends and community. He was a loving husband, father and coach who was blessed to have impacted so many lives over the years. He will be greatly missed but never forgotten. A celebration of life for Alex will take place on June 29th, 2024, with a venue and time TBD. In lieu of flowers please send donations to Vanguard HS Touchdown Club 1120 NE 4th St, Ocala, FL 34470.

Sorry to hear that another Concord graduate and fellow team mate has passed on. Alex and I were both from Hollywood, FL and shared many trips home; all of which had some of Alex's famous humor injected through something he did or said. Alex leaves us with many great memories as a classmate at Concord, a fraternity brother (Sigma Tau Gamma) and fellow Mountain Lion on the field. I'm proud to have known him and to follow his successful coaching career which resulted not only in wins and losses, but positive impacts on significant numbers of young men. Rest in peace my friend and my best to your family in this time of sadness. John Anzivino CU 1974

Alex's mother and my mother were best friends. When I was about 7 I had a cat Misu who I would bring to his house and he would constantly tease me by making believe he was putting the cat in the washer etc. He was a great person! So sorry to hear of his passing. Prayers lifted for his family. Rest in peace my brother from another mother!

I went to McArthur High School with Alex. He was such a great friend. Always positive and upbeat. A great football player and track star. He and Debbie would come to our class reunions, the two of them so in love and always talking about their beloved children. And Alex loved his students and players. Alex was special. He will be truly missed. Prayers for Debbie and family. May Alex rest in peace.

Peace be with you coach. I was blessed to have you in my life as a coach and mentor. Your teaching of love for self, family, and others continue to be a part of my life today. A price cannot be put upon how much love you gave to all if who were blessed to be in your presence. The long hot two a day football practices are no more. The laps around the track at a time my body wanted to quit but you encouraged me to keep going are no more. The memories of our laughs and sharing dry jokes will last in my memories forever. God bless Sam Hancock #36
