Alex Pozniak Obituary

Alex Joseph Pozniak

Oct 31, 1933 - Jan 24, 2026

Alex Joseph Pozniak, 92, of Winston-Salem, N.C., passed away peacefully on January 24, 2026 after a brief illness.

Born October 31, 1933, in South Amherst, Ohio, to Mary and Felix Pozniak, Alex lived a life defined by family, faith, education and service. He graduated from Amherst High School in 1951, and then from Heidelberg University in Tiffin, Ohio in 1955, where he played varsity football, basketball, and baseball. He went on to serve his country in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1958, spending time stationed in Korea. In 1965, he earned a master's degree in education administration from Kent State University.

Alex dedicated more than 30 years to public education as a teacher, principal, counselor and system administrator, leaving a lasting impact on generations of students. His commitment to service extended beyond the classroom through his many years as a Rotarian in Amherst, Ohio, where he served as president, was a Paul Harris Fellow, welcomed international exchange students into his home and participated in business exchanges with England, Sweden and Australia.

Alex loved wood working and gardening, collecting stamps and coins, reading and working through crossword puzzles. Above all else, he loved to fish- on Lake Erie, in the Atlantic Ocean, or anywhere there was water and a good story to be told.

A man of deep faith, Alex was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Amherst, Ohio, and later St. Leo the Great Catholic Church in Winston-Salem after relocating to North Carolina in 2002.

Alex's greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Judith Clayton Pozniak; daughters Jeanne Brooker (Tim), Christine Jolly, and Nancy Pozniak (Jim Bodnar); grandchildren Sarah and Alex Brooker, and Helena Jolly; sister Felicia Deidrick; and brother Stanley Pozniak (Denise). He was a devoted husband, a loving father, a proud grandfather, and a steady presence whose wisdom and warmth will be deeply missed.

A Funeral Mass will be held Friday, January 30, 2026, at 10 a.m., at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, 335 Springdale Ave., Winston-Salem, N.C.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Amherst Schools Endowment Fund - Donor Fund c/o Community Foundation of Lorain County, 9080 Leavitt Road, Elyria, OH 44035, or to the charity of the donor's choice. Condolences may be made online at www.salemfh.com.
