Alexander "Alex" Herd age 93 of Berkley, Michigan passed away on Friday, May 17, 2024, with his loving family at his side.
Alex was born in Detroit, Michigan on June 23, 1930. He was the son of Alexander and Marguerite Herd. Mr. Herd was a veteran of the United States Navy Reserves from June 23, 1947, to May 3, 1949, and served active duty in the United States Marine Corp from October 12, 1950, to April 20, 1952, where he held the rank of Sargeant. He was honorably discharged from The United States Marine Corps Reserves on the 20th of July 1953.
He married Frances Adell Chitty on July 31, 1954, at Royal Oak Methodist Church. She preceded him in death on May 14, 2017, after 62 years of marriage.
Alex received a certification from Lawrence Technological University. He was self-employed in Civil Engineering as a Land Surveyor.
Alex was an outdoorsman; he loved to hunt and fish. During his life he was a strong brave marine and was a cancer survivor.
Surviving are his children, Michael (Leigh Anne) Herd and Diana (William) Keefe; grandchildren, Micaila (John) Brown, Toria Herd, Adam Herd, Cara Keefe, Erin Keefe, and Lily Keefe: great-grandchildren, Nora and Hannah Brown; siblings, Eileen Davis and a sister-in-law Barbara Herd. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Steven Herd and his wife Frances.
Visitation at the Sawyer-Fuller Funeral Home 2125 Twelve Mile Road in Berkley, (two blocks west of Woodward Avenue) Thursday, May 23rd from 3 pm to 8 pm with a service at 7 pm.
Mr. Herd will be laid to rest next to his wife Frances at Roseland Park Cemetery in Berkley, 11 am Friday May 24th. He will be buried with military honors under the direction of the United States Marine Corps.
Memorial contributions may be made to Ferndale Public Schools to assist with the construction of a Lego Wall.
