ALEXANDER V. NOLE, SR.
A Man of Lifelong Service
Alessandro "Alex" Virgilio Fortunato Nole, Sr. died peacefully on December 15, 2023 at his home in Wolcott at the age of 106. He was the husband of the late Professor Julia Richards Nole, RN, BSN, MPH who predeceased him by 19 years.
Born in Waterbury on September 12, 1917, Alex was the son of Italian immigrants Leonardo Nole and Maria Incoronata (Gertrude) Lorusso from Avigliano, Italy. He resided in Wolcott since 1952 with his wife Julia Richards Nole and family.
Alex served in WWII in the Army Air Corps, as an office clerk, as well as with the Chaplain. He was a member of the 446th Bomb Group, stationed in England from 1943-1945.
Well known for his community service in Wolcott, he served for 40 years as the President of the Library Board of the Wolcott Public Library, which named its children's library in his honor. He demonstrated tireless service to the Wolcott Public Library, working to develop it from a one-room schoolhouse to its present site with media services and a children's library. He attended meetings of the Friends of the Library until he was over 100 years old.
He modeled a deeply religious nature throughout his life and demonstrated dedication to the Catholic church. He was instrumental in having St. Pius X Church built in 1952. He served as President of the Church Council for 40 years and was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Alex Nole and his wife were active in the American Field Service in Wolcott and hosted many foreign students in their home: Carmen Luz Andrade-Vilaro, MD of Chile; Betty Escudero of Ecuador; Leif-Ottar Pettersen of Norway, and Molly Miranda Phillips of Malaysia. All of them call him "Dad."
His main focus was as a devoted family man, working full-time in production planning management at Uniroyal, Inc. for his entire career.
He is survived by his three children: his daughter, Mary Anne Nole Zecchino and her husband Julius Zecchino; his son, Alexander ("Sandy") V. Nole, Jr and his wife Pamela Nole.; and his daughter Phyllis Nole Furlong RN BSN ICP, SDC, WCC and her husband Christian Furlong; and his five grandchildren Alexander Zecchino and his wife Carolina Zecchino, Marina Zecchino Turso and her husband Daniel Turso, Liz Nole Goodman and her husband Jeremy Goodman, David Nole and his wife Tali Nole, and Steven Nole and his wife Scarlett Nole.
He also leaves behind seven great grandchildren: Skyler Zecchino; Brandon and Christian Turso; Jonathan and Grace Goodman; and Benjamin, Sawyer and Adam Nole as well as several generations of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter-in-law Vivian Patnaude Nole, R.N, his brothers Vincent Nole, S. Francis Nole, Edmund Nole, and Vito Nole and his sisters Judy Ruscitto and Sylvia Rinaldi.
The family is very grateful to Cofi Smith who cared for him in his final years of life, and to Mary DuBois who assisted him in continuing his Catholic Faith in the home with weekly communion. As Mary explains, "He is a very Holy man, he is close to God." Mr. Nole has been honored numerous times by the church hierarchy, as well as town officials.

Alex's funeral will be held on Thursday, December 21, 2023 at 10:00 am from Maiorano Funeral Home, 95 Willow St., Waterbury to St. Pius X Church in Wolcott for Mass at 11:00am. Burial with full military honors will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday evening from 4:00 – 6:00pm.
