Alfred John Cooper

Alfred John Cooper peacefully passed from his earthly life to Heaven on March 20, 2025, the first day of Spring, while in hospice care at home, with his daughter, beloved Yorkie companion, Ikey, and his special cousin Carol at his side. Born in Champaign, IL to Eli and Pauline (Stiebner) Cooper, from the age of 5 through early teenage years, Alfred lived a humble life in Deland, IL with his grandmother, Clara Cooper and was lovingly known by everyone as “Strawberry”; for every nickel he earned, he would treat himself to a strawberry soda-pop. He often helped the butcher after school, so he could take scraps home for his grandma to cook meals for his big family.

Alfred received his diploma from Deland-Weldon Junior High School in May 1953, then went on to live with his mother while he worked as a stock clerk at Robeson Department Store and attended Champaign Senior High School. Alfred received his HS diploma in June 1957 and was the only of Eli’s original 7 children to finish high school. After graduation, Alfred lived and worked with his Uncle Buck on his milk route.

Alfred began his military journey on April 3, 1961, when he enlisted in the U.S. Army. Just months later, on August 18, 1961, he graduated with honors from the U.S. Army Southeastern Signal School Lineman Course at Fort Gordon, GA, earning distinction in the top tier of his class. His early dedication set the stage for a remarkable career. In April 1962, Alfred received a top security clearance, and by September 6, 1962, he had earned the rank of E3. His ascent continued with a promotion to Specialist E4 on March 14, 1963, followed by recognition as "Trooper of the Day" on April 18 and November 14, 1963, reflecting his exemplary service. Each recognition awarded Cooper 3 months exempt of all obligatory special service duties. 

Stationed in Germany with the 3rd Armored (Spearhead) Division, A Company 143rd Signal Battalion, Alfred served for over five years, contributing significantly to Cold War efforts. On December 16, 1963, he received a Letter of Appreciation for his expertise, dedication, and leadership during Operation Big Lift, an exercise pivotal to U.S. military strategy for rapid deployment, showcasing the resolve of the Army and its NATO allies. His work ensured continuous, reliable communications for the division, a critical factor in its success.

Alfred’s achievements earned him further accolades and responsibilities as he reenlisted on April 2, 1964 and graduated with honors on May 1, 1964 from the Non-Commissioned Officer Academy, followed by a promotion to E5 on June 25, 1964. That year, he excelled again, graduating with honors from both the Radio Relay and Carrier Operators Course on August 18 and the Radio Relay and Carrier Operators School on September 18, earning two letters of commendation for the latter. His leadership and skill culminated in a promotion to Staff Sergeant (E6) in June 1966. Earlier, on January 29, 1966, he received the Order of the Silver Talon for his outstanding performance in the Silver Talon training exercise, followed by the Good Conduct Medal on May 9, 1966.

Alfred completed his service in Germany and, after a brief assignment at Fort Collins, CO, where he studied courses in Code of Conduct, Military Justice A, and the Geneva Convention, received the National Defense Service Medal, and an honorable discharge on March 31, 1967. Following his military career, he embraced a humble life, exploring various career paths until his retirement. Alfred’s legacy most assuredly reflects one of steadfast commitment to duty, leadership, and excellence.

Alfred married Christel Marie Petschak on August 11, 1965. She survives and resides in Clearwater, FL. Together they had two children, Claudia (Billy) of Portland, TN and Stephen (Kimberley) of Clearwater, FL. Also surviving are Alfred’s grandson, Patrick (Nikki), and great-grandson, Greyson of Mansfield, IL. His cherished grandson, Joey preceded him in death in 2006.

Alfred is also survived by siblings Wilbur of Monticello, IL; Clyde, Fred, and Tabatha, all of Michigan; Penny of NY; Sonja, Ricky, and Cheryl, all living in Germany; and 28 nieces & nephews. Cooper is preceded in death by his beloved grandma Clara, his parents, 3 sisters, and 5 brothers.

There will be a Celebration of Life with full military honors for Alfred during the Cooper Family Reunion, to take place on August 31, 2025, at American Legion Post 102, in Deland, IL. Alfred never met a stranger. He loved all of his friends like family. A Celebration of Life for his dear friends to attend will take place on August 30, 2025, at Pippa’s Pub in Champaign, IL. 

Memorial contributions can be made in Alfred’s honor to a Hospice organization of your choosing, or to the Alfred Cooper Memorial Fund, c/o his daughter, Claudia, who lovingly cared for Alfred full time in her home from August 2020 unto his death.
