Mr. Alfred "Al" Dalton Riddick, Sr., son of the late Augustus and Flora Woolard Riddick, was born on December 16, 1944, in Martin County, North Carolina. He transitioned from this earthly life to his heavenly home on Sunday, January 25, 2026, at his home in
Littleton, North Carolina.
During his early life, Al accepted Christ and joined Cedar Hill Baptist Church in Williamston, North Carolina. After relocating to Halifax County, North Carolina, he joined Oak Grove Baptist Church in
Littleton, North Carolina, where he was an active member and especially enjoyed serving as an Adult Sunday School teacher, singing in the Male Chorus, and maintaining the grounds of the church's new cemetery.
Al received his formal education in the public schools of Martin County, North Carolina, and graduated from E. J. Hayes High School in Williamston, North Carolina, with the class of 1963. He then attended North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, North Carolina, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology in 1968. In 1983, Al furthered his education at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina, receiving a Master's Degree in Administrative Education.
On August 30, 1969, Al was united in Holy Matrimony to the love of his life, the former Alice Marie James. God blessed this union with two children. Although his work and community involvement kept him busy, Al was a devoted and present husband, father, and grandfather who lovingly provided for his family. Having no formal construction background, Al decided to personally build a home for his family, which was completed in 1983 with the help of family, friends, and church members.
Al loved people and was a strong advocate for education. After beginning his career as a teacher at J.A. Chaloner School in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, he also held other teaching and administrative positions throughout the school system, including principal of Inborden Elementary, Eastman Middle, Brawley Middle, and Southeast Halifax High. He was deeply committed to the youth and always put their needs first. It was especially meaningful to hear former students share how he made a lasting impression in their lives.
Al retired from the Halifax County School System in June 1997 and later became employed part-time with the Warren County School System as a Total Quality Management Consultant and Novice Trainer. He also served the Halifax County School System as an Induction Specialist and as a Project Coordinator for the Northeastern Math/Science Partnership Program.
Al's hobbies included working on vehicles, attending sporting events at NC A&T, entertaining family and friends, cooking on the grill, listening to jazz, and simply taking joy rides. He also enjoyed serving others through active membership in numerous organizations and volunteering on several committees. His board affiliations included the Department of Social Services, the Choanoke Area Development Association (CADA), and The John 3:16 Center. Throughout his life, he received multiple educational awards and recognitions. A devoted Aggie, Al maintained membership in NC A&T's Halifax-Northampton Alumni Chapter. Even during his illness, he remained steadfast in his zest for life.
In addition to his parents, Al was preceded in death by two brothers, Ernest Riddick and Augustus Riddick; and five brothers-in-law, Winston James, Elbert Williams, Mitchell Melton, Donald Phillips, and Grover Williams.
Treasured memories of his life and the legacy of his love will forever remain in the hearts of his wife of fifty-six years, Alice J. Riddick of the home; his children, Shawanda R. Pauldin (Roderick) of Fayetteville, Georgia, and Alfred D. Riddick Jr. (Lesia) of Fairfield Township, Ohio; two grandchildren, Joshua and Andrew Pauldin of Fayetteville, Georgia; two brothers, Jimmy Riddick (Valerie) of Washington, North Carolina, and Tommy Riddick (Pamela) of Williamston, North Carolina; three sisters, Evelyn Melton of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Flora Phillips of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and Sharon Hanson (James) of Hamilton, North Carolina; five sisters-in-law, Marva Walker (Donald) of El Centro, California, Mary Williams-Smith (Ubzell) of Winterville, North Carolina, Nell Lewis of Greenville, North Carolina, Edith James of East Orange, New Jersey, and Ella Riddick of Williamston, North Carolina; one brother-in-law, Stephen James (Carolyn) of Wadesboro, North Carolina; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
