Alice Marguerite Cahill Birdseye, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, who lived a life of service, faith, and passion, passed away peacefully on September 19, 2025, in
Williamsburg, Virginia, at the age of 95. Born on November 30, 1929, in New Haven, New York, Alice's life was defined by her devotion to family, community, her faith, and the many interests that brought her joy and fulfillment.
Alice dedicated her life to being a homemaker and caring for her family. Her home was a place where love was always in abundant supply, and her talents in cooking, quilting, crocheting, and upholstering were shared generously with friends and family alike.
Her deep faith guided her throughout her life, and she was an active member of James River Baptist Church and Glencarlyn Road Baptist Church, where she participated in Bible studies, led youth groups, and sang in the choir. Her commitment to lifelong learning and teaching Bible studies inspired many around her to deepen their own relationships with the Lord.
Alice was a woman of many passions. She was an avid reader, a skillful embroiderer, a dedicated gardener, and a talented bowler. Her love for history led her to be an active member of historical societies such as the Daughters of the American Revolution, Children of the American Revolution, Colonial Dames of the 17th Century, and the Huguenot Society. She also delighted in antiquing, finding treasures that connected the past with the present.
A true civic-minded individual, Alice was involved in the Republican Party of Virginia and contributed her time to community service. She nurtured young minds as a troop leader for both the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, a school volunteer, and a substitute teacher. Her leadership and guidance left indelible marks on the lives of countless young people.
Alice enjoyed the camaraderie and strategic challenge of playing Bridge with friends, where her sharp mind and warm heart shone brightly. Her life was a testament to the power of community, faith, and the pursuit of one's passions.
She is now rejoined with her husband Elmer Hawley Havens Birdseye; brothers Patrick and Joseph; sister Elizabeth; and parents Donald Herbert Cahill and Alice Marguerite Jevens in Heaven. Left to cherish her memory are her sons James Havens Birdseye (Debra) and Donald Kippen Birdseye (Miho); daughters Sarah Elizabeth Vaas (Andrew) and Susan Marie Rodenberg; as well as 9 beloved grandchildren and 5 beloved great-grandchildren.
A memorial service to honor Alice's life will be held at James River Baptist Church on Sunday, September 28 at 2 pm.
