Wilmington, NC
Alice Robinson Calder (1953 - 2025)
Alice was born in Newton, NC to Robert Rhyne Robinson and Virginia Yount Robinson. Following an idyllic childhood in Conover, NC with her older brother Robert in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains, she attended Lees-Mcrae College and later also received certification as a medical lab technician. Her career in the medical field took her to many places of work in the piedmont region of North Carolina including the prestigious research division of the Duke University Hospital. She met her husband, Keith, while they were both living in Hickory, NC. After their marriage and the birth of their first child, Alice and her family relocated to Wilmington, NC, where she resided for the rest of her life.
She identified as a "feeler, not a thinker," and used her intuitive gifts to touch the lives of many. She poured love and laughter into the lives of family and friends. Alice exhibited unparalleled generosity of spirit, and often volunteered first to help someone in need. In her later years, Alice followed her calling to help others heal by becoming a massage therapist, a vocation through which she shared her gift of touch and intuitive care. She also dedicated countless hours to raising her children to pursue their interests while maintaining their values with integrity.
Alice enjoyed various creative pursuits. She delighted many with her beautiful singing voice, and in early adulthood, she learned to play guitar. She was equally at home with her hands in clay, or in dirt, coaxing life out of the earth. She wrote poetry, and painted with watercolors. During her time at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Alice was able to use her creative talent in helping to establish a service accompanied by folk music.
As a life-long follower of Christ, Alice devoted her time to making the world a kinder place for vulnerable people. She spent countless hours working in the Good Shepherd Center's soup kitchen, helping to feed the hungry. Alice also served on the founding board of Empty Bowls during its inaugural year, supporting local organizations that address food insecurity across the Cape Fear region. She also helped coordinate children's activities for the Episcopal Farmworkers Ministry in rural Eastern North Carolina.
She is survived by husband Keith Calder, daughters Kelly Tuck and Emily Calder, sons-in-law Hunter Tuck and Austin Glover, grandchildren Harrison and Charlotte Tuck, brother Robert Robinson, sister-in-law Valerie Robinson, and nephew Joshua Robinson. Although her illness robbed her of what should have been her golden years, she will forever be cherished by those who loved her.
Family and friends are invited to a celebration of her life at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 16 N. 16th Street, on November 22, 2025 at 11am, with a reception immediately following in the Parish Hall.
