Alice Crabb Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 6, 2012.
Alice Marie Crabb, 82, passed away on Monday, August 6, 2012, in Vancouver, WA. She is survived by her daughters, Janeen Hammers and Shari Clevenger, Vancouver, WA; her sons, Gary Crabb of Damascus, OR and Darrell Crabb of Issaquah, WA; grandchildren, Orion Crabb, Francine Crabb and Zoey Crabb; great-grandsons, Aiden and Conrad. She also leaves behind her companion of 13 years, Nunnally Johnson, Portland, OR. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Crabb, in 1996. Alice was born and raised in Flint, Michigan, where she met and married Eugene Crabb (1948). In 1958, they and their three young children, moved to Virginia, where they lived for 10 years. In 1968, they packed up four kids and a dog, and drove across the country to Oregon, eventually settling in Milwaukie. They bought a house and finally put down roots. Alice worked part-time at Fred Meyers for a couple years, but was mostly a homemaker. She was very involved with the Elks Club exercise group, and with the local ice skating clubs. Eugene worked as a Plumber and as a Steamfitter, until he retired in 1991. They enjoyed spending time with their 3 grandchildren that they adored; square dancing and travel. Alice kept up her ice skating and took up hula as well. After Eugene passed away in 1996, Alice remained living in the home. In Fall of 1996, she met Nunnally Johnson. She was so happy to find someone who shared her love of square dancing (and dancing to big band music), and even more, who shared her love of travel. They were together until Alice's passing. When Alice became ill in February 2010, he was by her side through it all. As she declined more and more, he visited her daily, for a year and a half, until her death. His goal was to make her laugh – every day – and most of the time, he succeeded. Alice loved water – the tropical warm kind, and the frozen rink kind. She excelled as a swimmer, diver, lifeguard, ice dancer, precision team ice skater, dancer (square dancing, hula, tap, jazz, etc.), an avid traveler, a gambler, a wine lover, a skydiver, and she loved to laugh more than anything. She was a wonderful, loving mother, grandmother, friend, and she will be missed very much, but never forgotten. At Alice's request, no funeral will be held. A wake, or celebration of life, will be held in her honor at the Milwaukie Elks Club on Sunday, September 9, from 2:00-5:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Hospice or to the Humane Society.
