Alice Marie (Rock) Matts, age 96, passed away peacefully at her home on April 26, 2025, with her daughters by her side. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, wife, sister, aunt, and friend, whose warmth and kindness will be remembered by those who knew her.
She found her greatest joy in spending time with her family, creating memories full of laughter, love, and treasured moments. Prior to moving to Sugar Loaf Senior Living earlier this year, Alice lived at the Kensington Apartments for many years where she formed cherished friendships and enjoyed many Saturday morning coffee gatherings, card and bingo games, and patio conversations. Her humor and sassy charm never faded, and that liveliness carried her through the years.
Alice was born August 10, 1928 in Chicago Illinois, the daughter of Frank J. Rock and Caroline (Dybas) Rock. She married Edward Matts on June 25, 1960 and he preceded her in death on January 9, 1994. Alice’s deep and abiding faith was the foundation of her life and guided her through every joy and challenge.
Alice is survived by her daughters, Susan (Kevin) O’Reilly of Winona, Minnesota, Carrie (Craig) Stargardt of Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin; her grandchildren, Sean O’Reilly of Minneapolis, MN, Colin O’Reilly of Minneapolis, MN, Shannon (Alec) Rubel of Cedar Rapids, IA, and Amanda Stargardt of Madison, WI. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, as well as great-nieces and great-nephews.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her siblings, Irene (Eddie) Calek of Chicago, Illinois, Frank (Blanche) Rock of La Grange Park, Illinois, and Dolores (Pete) Niebrugge of Effingham, Illinois.
Family extends their sincere gratitude to the care team at Winona Area Hospice and the staff at Sugar Loaf Senior Living in Winona, who provided compassionate care to Alice in her final days.
