She was my third grade teacher at the Buzzell School in Wilmington, and my gym teacher and basketball coach in high school. She was very kind to me. I remember her putting some brown salve on my finger that I hurt during a game, and when I said something about what an awful color it was, she asked me if I would mind my skin being that color. I can´t recall the rest of the conversation, but I somehow knew and always remembered what she was trying to point out.

Gym class. Nice lady. Always made you feel at ease, and she was most encouraging. Strangely enough, I was just thinking of her recently after all these years. She leaves a good legacy as a kind and caring teacher.

Beginning in college in the late forties, we were friends through these many years. Particularly memorable was the summer cross-country trip, Thanksgivings together in Maine, and interesting visits with her Jesuit brothers.

My thoughts and prayers are with Miss McCarthy's family. I was a student at Wilmington High and had Miss McCarthy as a gym teacher and coach at various sports. She was a very dedicated teacher.
