Allen L. Hunt "Big Al"
Allen L. Hunt, 80, of Wells, NY passed away on 5/10/2024 at home with his family by his side. He fought a long, hard battle with kidney disease. The family expresses their gratitude to Carla Darrow FNP, HCPH Brett, Gloversville Dialysis, and Mohawk Valley Hospice for their exceptional care for Allen. Allen was born in 1943 to Margie Mae and George Hunt. He was the youngest surviving of 4 siblings, Edward, Donald, and Joan Hunt.
Allen was born in Bleeker, and moved to Wells when he was 4yrs old, which became his home for life. He attended Wells Central School, where he was a star athlete, playing soccer, basketball, and baseball. In high school, Allen met the love of his life, Alona. They got married on graduation night and held their reception in the middle of Route 30 in Wells. Alona was Allen's better half, best friend, and shotgun rider. Allen and Alona were the "Bonnie & Clyde" of Wells, they were forever inseparable.
Together, they loved three children dearly: Melody Mae, Mark (Jane) Hunt, and Margie Mae Hunt, who died as an infant. Allen loved his children and always made time to create fun memories for them to hold onto for life. He enjoyed family vacations and big family parties. Allen always had his home and arms wide open for his nieces and nephews, Jeffrey, Timmy, Kelly, Kristen, Kendal, Michelle, and Maribeth.
One of Allen's greatest joys and blessings was becoming a grandfather to his first, Margie Mae, (Steven) "Pumpkin." Allen loved taking her on Disney trips, hunting, fishing, vacations, and watching her grow. Allen later had a grandson, Dillon Hunt, who he enjoyed taking on hunting and fishing trips.
Allen had two great-granddaughters, Mirabella Mae and Kensley Hunt, and one stepgreat grandson, MJ. Allen's love for Mirabella was unconditional. She made his days brighter with laughter and smiles. They enjoyed playing ball, eating ice cream, and watching "Gun Smoke." He also enjoyed eating popsicles with Kensley.
Allen was a jack of many trades and loved to work. Allen and Alona owned and operated a family business for years, "Hunt's Hotel." They served amazing food, tended bars, and took care of many veterans. In his younger years, he drove a truck for his brother Ed Hunt at "Hunt Brothers." Allen was a true politician who served his community as the Town of Wells Supervisor for 14 years, known as "the new kid on the block!" He also held the chairman seat for part of his supervisor term. He devoted many hours and time to his community, the youth program, and senior bus trips. Allen retired in his later years from the Local Union 106, operating engineers, as a crane operator of over 55 years. Allen was a member of the Masons, Shriners, Wells Fish & Game Club, Hamilton County Republican Committee, Wells Volunteer Fire Co, Wells Methodist Church, and Wells Improvement Group.
Allen was a popular man who would do anything for anyone, enjoyed being around people, and loved his friends. If he didn't know you, he was quick to ask questions to find out who you were, to create a friendship. Allen loved sports, westerns, hunting, fishing, horses, hot rod trucks/cars, running roads, parties, vacations, collecting guns/knives, and most importantly his family. He loved food and cooking! His brother Ed and him could each eat a dozen ears of corn faster than you could blink. You could also find him eating a dozen donuts in his bulldozer for breakfast. Allen loved conversations and storytelling. He was always a true sweetheart and would always help out anyone in need. Allen loved dogs and he had many over the years, Cherry Bomb, Rags, Boots, Lady, Rover, and his favorite, "Ladybug."
Allen was known by many as "BIG AL!" It wasn't hard to figure out why he received that name because he was a big guy, with a big voice, big smile, big laugh, and most importantly the Biggest Heart! His kindness, generosity, and unwavering love will leave a lasting legacy that will continue to inspire us for years to come.
Allen leaves behind his most precious gift, his beloved wife, Alona, "one shot kill" of 61 years. Together they enjoyed a beautiful life of adventures and love. Their love was once in a lifetime and will forever be cherished. In most recent years they have enjoyed spending time with Mirabella, and 2 dogs, Magnum and Theo. There will be a burial ceremony at a later date for friends and family at the Prospect Hill Cemetery of Northville.
