Allen Leroy Smith, or Al as he was lovingly known, of Westerville, passed away on November 12, 2025, at the age of 93. Born in Johnstown, Al and his older brother Bill both worked on their familys farm, before enlisting in the Air Force where he was a part of the boat squadron. It was Bill who advised him to enlist in the Air Force, when he told him to join the Army if you want to crawl on your belly for the next few years. During the Korean War, he was stationed in Bermuda where he met Carole Jones, and married her not long after. Following his time in the service, he worked at AT&T and went on to have a family that loved and cherished him dearly. Al loved watching the Ohio State Buckeyes football team every Saturday and often watched the Cleveland Browns whenever he could. It was known by his family that he would have loved to have seen them win the Super Bowl before he passed. He was very fond of western TV shows, and always had GRIT TV on everyday.
Al was preceded in death by his parents, Clara B. Love and Arthur Smith and his older brother Bill.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years Carole, and their 3 daughters; Barbara, Pamela (Brent) and Jennifer (Todd). He is also survived by his 5 grandchildren, Kristina (Andy), Danielle (Tiffani), Nicholas, Michael and Lauren as well as his 5 great-grandchildren, Kaylen, Averia, Sladen, Jaden and Wayne.
Calling hours will be held at Moreland Funeral Home, 55 E. Schrock Road, Westerville on Wednesday, November 19, 2025 from 4-6 p.m. with a small service to follow at 6 p.m. In accordance with his wishes, Al will be buried at Dayton National Cemetrery in Dayton, OH where family will be attending on November 21, 2025.
People who knew Al can place well wishes at www.morelandfuneralhome.com and/or send flowers and well wishes to Carole Smith.
Donations can also be made in his name to the Alzheimer's Association at www.donorservices.alz.org, since Al bravely battled the disease for the last 20 years.
