Allyn Schmid Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Wright & Salmon Mortuary - Peoria on Oct. 28, 2024.
Allyn George Schmid, 87, died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2024 peacefully in his sleep in Tampa, Florida. Al and his wife Deanne lived in Peoria from 1961 until moving permanently to Ft. Myers, FL, in 2013.
Al was born in Austin, MN, the second child of George and Mildred Schmid. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Loras College in Dubuque, IA, where he met and fell in love with Deanne. They married and moved to Chicago for a short time where he began his career as a CPA with Price Waterhouse. He became a lifelong Bears fan.
Al and Deanne moved to Peoria when he took a job with Pabst Brewing Co. A few years later, he took a position with Fleming Packaging Co., from where he ultimately retired as CFO. The couple made many dear friends in town as they became active at Holy Family Church. This led them to the Cursillo movement in Peoria, where they were integral members for many years. After retirement, Al worked for a few years at the Diocese of Peoria, and with cherished friends at Callahan Pork Processing. They joined St. John XXIII Catholic Church in Ft. Myers, where they developed many friends attending daily Mass.
Al developed a passion for golf and he spent many years sharing his love of the game. He was a popular player, enjoying long stints at Mt. Hawley Country Club in Peoria and The Forest Country Club in Ft. Myers.
Al's friends and colleagues knew him as a man of integrity. He relied on his faith as he and Deanne raised and educated their children, remaining part of their lives as they established their own families. Al enjoyed the fortune of spending quality time with his grandchildren, leaving many special memories.
Allyn is survived by four loving children: Ellen Schmid Blix of Nashville, TN; Anne Terese Wiles (the late James) of Tampa; Mary Bridget Landry (David) of Jamison, PA, and Paul Allyn Schmid (Katie) of Chicago. He is the wonderful grandfather of nine: Stephen (Michelle), David and Adam Blix; Alison Wiles Awe (Adebola), Joseph and Carolyn Wiles Savage (Austin); Michael, Elyse and Ryan Landry. His three great-grandchildren, James Olayimika Awe, Waylon James and Islay Sage Savage brought him great joy. Allyn also is survived by many nieces and nephews.
Deanne, his wife of 58 years, preceded him in death in 2018, as did a son Allyn George Schmid Jr. in 1961. His parents also preceded him in death, as did his brother James (Kathy.) He is additionally survived by his sister Lois Schmeider (the late Louie) and brothers Bill (Mary) and Tony (Ann).
Funeral services will be Saturday, Nov. 16, 2024, at Holy Family Church. Visitation will be 9-10:30 am with a funeral Mass at 10:30 am. Interment will follow immediately at Resurrection Mausoleum.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Allyn's name to Holy Family Catholic Church, 3720 N. Sterling Ave., Peoria, IL 61615.
