Alta Gray Drummond

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved Alta Maria Gray Drummond, who departed this life on January 20, 2026 at the age of 97 in Virginia Beach, VA. She was a cherished mother, grandmother, and great grandmother who touched the lives of everyone she met. Some of the things she will be remembered for were her fierce and unconditional love for her family, her welcoming home and home cooked meals, her beauty and sense of style, and her strength and determination.

Born in 1928 in Norfolk, Va to Julius and Bessie Gray, one of 4 children, Alta had a love of singing and entertained the troops in the USO with the Joe Brown Gang. She went on to continue singing for us over the years, all of the old classics. She and her husband, Stuart were 'snowbirds' and enjoyed the winters in Florida for many years.

Alta is survived by her 2 sons, Stuart Auer (Lucy) of Chesapeake, VA and Bart Auer (Barbara) of Virginia Beach; as well as 3 grandchildren, Kimberly, Jennifer, and Dex; and 5 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Stuart Drummond.

A private graveside service will be held on Friday, January 23, 2026, at Elmwood Cemetery, beginning at 1pm.

The family wishes to thank all the staff at Baylake Retirement as well as Hospice Care for the many hours of dedicated attention and service Alta received while in their care, especially the past few difficult weeks.

Our Mom and Nannie will be deeply missed, but her love and legacy will remain in our hearts forever.
