Alton "Al" J. Wharton, Jr, age 90, of Swanwyck Estates, New Castle passed away peacefully on May 20, 2025.
Born in Wilmington, DE on November 11, 1934, he was the son of the late Alton J. Wharton, Sr. and Lillie Ann (Reese) Joyce.
Al was a graduate of Wilmington High School and Goldey Beacom College and proudly served in the U. S. Marine Corps. He worked as a Fire Inspector at Texaco/Star Enterprises, Delaware City Refinery, for 40 years. He was a long-time member of New Castle Free Will Baptist Church where he was a Deacon and sang in the choir.
In addition to his parents, Al was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Doris Ann nee Hill, his son, Mark J. Wharton, sisters, Lillie Ann Walker, Alice Provin, Mary Pandelakis and brothers, Frank Wharton and Jerry Joyce.
He is survived by his three sons, John "Jack" (Bonnie) of Middletown, DE, Daniel of New Castle, DE and Paul (Suzanne) of Middletown, DE, two daughters, Lorrie Scott (Jimmy) of Toccoa, GA, and Linda Smith (David) of Bear, DE, 18 grandchildren, and 29 great-grandchildren, siblings, Clarence Joyce (Barbara), William Joyce (Kathleen), Kathy Baranski (Jerry) and Joy Scott (Steve); brothers-in-law, Jim Walker and Dennis Pandelakis, sisters-in-law, Catherine Wharton and Jewell Joyce, and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be held privately.
