Alvern Junior Kersbergen

Alvern (Al) Junior Kersbergen died on December 25, 2022. He was 96 years old.
Al was born November 24, 1926 in Fremont, Nebraska. He and his wife, Barbara, called Des Moines, Iowa home before moving to Daytona Beach, FL to raise their family of four. Upon retirement, they lived in Haines City FL. for 23 years before moving to Asheville in 2011.
Al married Barabara Housh in Des Moines on August 16, 1953. Before she passed away on October 27, 2018, Barbara and Al had been married for 65 beautiful years. They had 4 wonderful children: Bill (Maria) now of Pembroke Pines, FL., Jim (who died on March 15, 1992), Tom (who died July 27, 2013) (Suzanne), and daughter Sue of Asheville, NC. Al is survived by 4 grandsons, Chris, Daniel, Brandon (Sarah) and Max (Logan); granddaughters Kayla and Courtney Schwein and step-granddaughters Ashley and Brooke Vernier, seven great granddaughters, Brynn, Natalie, Kingsley, Everest, Waylynn, Lillian and Nelle, and one great grandson, Maverick. He is also survived by his brother Gil of Upland CA. He was predeceased by his parents and sisters, Gloria and Paulette.
Al was a Navy veteran of WWII and loved his country dutifully. He was a graduate of Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. He was active in his church and loved attending the Mill River Life Enrichment Center events on Thursdays with Barbara when they lived in Asheville. Al was a lover of cards, particularly "hand and foot" and "bridge." He always had a camcorder in hand at family events and was so proud of his children and grandchildren.
Al lived a long and fulfilling life and was surrounded by loved ones on Christmas Day at his passing. He was a deeply religious man and wanted nothing more than to spend Christmas in Heaven with his wife, two of his sons, Jim and Tom, and daughter-in-law, Maria. We can't even begin to imagine the kind of celebration that was thrown upon his arrival, and we are deeply grateful for the years that he spent leading his family on earth.
The family is planning a small Celebration of Life in the coming months.
