Dan Kersbergen, age 73 of Spirit Lake, Iowa and formerly of Marshalltown, Iowa, passed away on August 17, 2025 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Daniel John Kersbergen was born August 17, 1952 in Hull, Iowa. He was the middle of five children born to John and Elizabeth (Gorzeman) Kersbergen. Dan grew up in Rock Valley, Iowa. He was a graduate of Rock Valley High School, Class of 1970. He furthered his education at Iowa State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Fisheries and Wildlife Biology in 1975.
On August 31, 1974, he was united in marriage to Abigail Miller at Peace Lutheran Church in rural Sioux Center, Iowa. They made their home in Marshalltown, Iowa, raising four children, Laura, Diana, Thomas and John. Dan started his own business, Ameripole Inspection Company specializing in the inspection of utility poles. While in Marshalltown, Dan and Abby were members of Our Savior Lutheran Church. They moved to Spirit Lake, IA in 2021.
In his free time, Dan was an avid outdoorsman. He expressed his love for God’s creation by spending as much time outdoors as possible. He loved deer and pheasant hunting and fishing for walleye. He had many favorite hunting spots around Marshall County (precise locations are only known to his closest of kin).
He stayed active coaching his children in their various sports and following them throughout their college years. He loved being a grandpa and was very proud of his grandchildren, often attending their sporting events and activities. He enjoyed catching frogs and turtles with his grandkids and sharing his love for the outdoors with them. A loyal Cyclone, he was passionate about Iowa State and rarely missed the opportunity to root for his favorite team.
Those left to remember and cherish his memory are his wife of 50 years, Abby; his children, Laura (Stephen) Bent, of Essex, VT, Diana Wright of Mahtomedi, MN, Thomas (Shelly) Kersbergen of Livingston, MT and John (Nichole) Kersbergen of Marshalltown, IA, grandchildren, Samuel, Levi and David Bent, Abigail and Joseph Wright, Clyde Kersbergen, Layla, Raymond, and Reginald Kersbergen. He is also survived by his siblings, Jack (Kathy) Kersbergen, Mark (Carolyn) Kersbergen and Robert (Martha) Kersbergen and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Elizabeth Kersbergen; sister in infancy, Mary Elizabeth Kersbergen; and paternal and maternal grandparents.
Services for Dan will be held on Monday, August 25, 2025 at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. A visitation for family and friends will begin at 2:00pm with funeral service to follow at 3:00pm.
