Alvin Broken Rope Jr. "AJ" was born in Crow Agency, MT on October 18, 1967 to Mary Hoops and Alvin Broken Rope Sr. He met the love of his life, Samantha Renita Stops, in 1989 through church activities at Foursquare Pentecostal Church. They were married June 27, 1991 at the same church where they met, and made their home in Crow Agency.
Waaxasehawatee (One Turtle), the name given to him by his Kaale' Dorothy Hoops. AJ was part of the Big Lodge Clan, a Child of the Big Lodge Clan and was a member of the Foursquare Pentecostal Church.
His elementary days were spent in Denver, CO at Greenly Elementary School. He then moved to Sioux Falls, SD with his dad and mother Kathleen Broken Rope, where he attended Central High School. He finished his educational journey at Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute.
Waaxaxehawatee entered the workforce at the very early age of 11 years old with his first paper route that he shared with his older sister and grandpa. AJ was a hard working man that was seldom without a job. Over the years he was a cashier, comedian, security guard, laborer, and at times an entrepreneur. He worked for various companies including but not limited to Rezavegas, the Crow Tribal Administration, Kwik Mart, KFC, AML, and Battlefield Express. His favorite gig was babysitting his grandsons.
AJ was called home on February 16, 2025 surrounded by his loved ones.
AJ is preceded in death by his mother Mary Hoops and father Alvin (Kathleen) Broken Rope Sr., adoptive mother Veda Ann Top of Mocassin Rock Above, grandparents; Dorothy Hoops, and Jim Big Shoulder, Godfrey and Lucy Broken Rope; mother and father-in-law Elizabeth and John Paul Other Medicine; brothers Danny Boy Half, Monty White Clay, Mike Takes Enemy, Tony Parrish, Lance Rock, Jacob Big Hair Jr., Joseph Broken Rope Jr., John Bullsight Jr., Paul "PM" Morning, Victor Carlos Nomee; sisters Iva Shane, Brenda Half, Tina Hoops Stewart, Belva Tushka; Dorinda Broken Rope, aunties Darlene Bixby, Carol Bullsight, Rena Morning, Irma Jean Hoops, Mercy (Daniel) Makes Good; uncles Sammy (Marjorie) Hoops, Gerry Hoops Wilson, Frank, Joseph, John, and Raymond Broken Rope; nephew Nehemiah (Rocko) Broken Rope and niece Nichelle (Birdie) Hoops.
AJ is survived by his wife of 35 years Samantha and daughters Renita (Riley) Broken Rope and Laura (Jace) Plain Bull, Lillian (Winston) Nomee, Zetta Broken Rope, Marceline and Lucrecia Little Nest, Amber (Roy) Walks, Sunshine (Geoffrey) Eastman; son's Adrian Broken Rope, Wahmbli Nomee, Elijah (Bessie) Stops At Pretty Places, Elias (Diamond) Stops At Pretty Places, Daniel "Red", Curtis, Eligin Brien, Andrew (Sarah) Little Nest, Delores Takes Enemy; sisters Lucy Broken Rope, Lona Broken Rope, Wahkuna Bixby, Wilhelmina (Pops) Mendoza, Cathy (Wayne) Not Afraid, Georgia Hoops (Paul) Matt, Lori (Larry) Eastman, Clemencia Stops at Pretty Places, Shannon Rockabove, Carlotta Half, Michelle Cadena, Sharon (Roger) Roehl, Ardith Hogan, Nicole Bowles, Becky (Johnny) Wilson, Aretha Hoops, April (Terry) Wilson-Enemy Hunter, Sandra Wilson, Rhonda Tall Man, Roberta Broken Rope; brothers Vine (Kao) Broken Rope, Thomas Broken Rope, William "Cheyenne" Bixby, Stu Broken Rope Lawrence, Greg (Dorcella) Half, Paul "J.R."
