Amparo (Polly) Santos Gonzales, age 93, of San Antonio, Texas, passed away peacefully on July 12, 2025. Born on January 13, 1932, in Hondo, Texas, she was the beloved daughter of Pedro E. Santos and Guadalupe B. Santos. Polly was raised in Seguin, Texas, where she attended school and later earned her General Educational Development (GED) certification.
On December 26, 1948, she married Roman Gonzales, Jr. of Seguin, and together they moved to San Antonio, purchasing their first home in 1953. Polly devoted her early years to raising their seven children, ensuring they received strong Catholic educations. All seven graduated from St. Leo's Catholic School in San Antonio, five from Catholic high schools, and four earned college degrees-a legacy of love, sacrifice, and determination.
Following her years as a homemaker, Polly worked in the jewelry business for over 30 years, known for her elegance, grace, and work ethic. She had a deep love for plants and flowers-especially her vibrant bougainvillea's-and took pride in nurturing beauty in her home and garden.
A devoted member of St. Leo the Great Catholic Church for 72 years, Polly actively supported parish ministries including the Altar Servers, Boy Scouts, and served faithfully as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion. In her quiet moments, she enjoyed Hallmark movies and reading, always treasuring the comfort of a good story.
Polly is survived by her seven children: Roman Gonzales III and Cynthia A. Blum of San Antonio; David R. Gonzales of Lakeway, TX; Michael A. Gonzales, Jesus T. Gonzales, and John E. Gonzales of San Antonio; and Joseph T. Gonzales of Vancouver, WA. She was the proud grandmother of 17 grandchildren (two of whom preceded her in death), 13 great-grandchildren (one deceased), and 5 great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Pete Santos, Jr.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of over 60 years, Roman Gonzales, Jr.; her parents; her sisters Eva Caffey and Magdalena Montoya; and her brothers Ermilo, David, Mike, and Alex Santos.
Polly was the heart of her family-a loving and thoughtful matriarch known for her intelligence, compassion, and unwavering faith. She rarely missed a birthday or milestone and instilled in her family the importance of prayer, perseverance, and unity. Though deeply missed, her family rejoices that she is no longer in pain and is now enjoying her eternal reward.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 31, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 7:30 PM at Mission Park South, 1700 SE Military Dr., San Antonio, TX, with the Rosary beginning at 7:00 PM.
Funeral services will take place on Friday, August 1, 2025, at 12:00 PM at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, 4401 S. Flores St., San Antonio, TX 78214, officiated by Fr. Antonio Gonzalez. Interment will follow at 2:30 pm at Pavillion 3, Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd., San Antonio, TX 78209.
