Amy Michelle (Rice) Gables
August 29, 1972-March 27, 2024
John 16:22 "So now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy."
Amy Michelle (Rice) Gables, age 51, died March 27, 2024, with her husband, Mark, the love of her life, by her side. This was so fitting because the two have been inseparable since the day they met. They spent their days together enjoying life with each other. The two lived their life to the fullest together boating, relaxing at The Jackson Yacht Club, traveling, attending Ole Miss events, and most of all parenting their beautiful daughters, Anna Rice and Abby. On a typical afternoon in the fall, you would find them all cheering on their beloved Ole Miss Rebels in the Grove and at the games.
The daughter of Jack and Joann Rice, Amy, while growing up in Pearl, knew from an early age she wanted to be a teacher. She would accompany her dad, a school principal, to his school and find an empty classroom where she would pretend to teach. She followed her childhood dream and graduated college with a degree in elementary education from Mississippi College. Amy spent a 28-year career in the classroom at JPS, Pearl and Madison Middle teaching and loving kids. She not only taught math, but she also taught kids to love themselves. She made all her students feel important and they would affectionately call her as "Mama G.", the teacher everyone wanted and hoped to get. One of her greatest joys while teaching at Madison Middle was being the Dance Team Coach.
Her personality was larger than life and she lived life to the fullest. Anyone who came in contact with her immediately loved her. According to her mother, Amy accomplished more in her short life than many do in a full lifetime. Her energy was boundless. During high school and college, Amy was a cheerleader, a campus beauty, and a school leader. She gave her all to any event or activity in which she was involved. Amy loved music and performed in church solos as a teenager. She enjoyed sharing her love of Yacht Rock Radio to everyone. She was known to perform her "versions" of Mustang Sally (Santa) at school events, social gatherings and weddings.
Amy lived with her husband and children in Madison. She loved decorating her house and enjoyed hosting parties with friends or family. She welcomed all and you could honestly say her house always had the welcome mat out to hang on the back porch.
Amy will be missed, but her legacy will live on forever. Her raspy and bossy voice will be remembered by all of her friends and family. Her love for family and life was cut short way too early by cancer.
She is survived by her husband Mark, of 26 years, their two daughters Anna Rice, 24, and Abby,19, her parents Jack and Joanne Rice, brother Trey Rice and his wife Melissa with their children Jack, Cate John Allen, as well as her sister Betsy Davis and her husband Lauren. She is also survived by Mark's parents, Mark and Tomine Gables.
The family asks you to lift up your prayers for Amy's medical team that has been at her side for the last three years during her battles In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to The American Cancer Society.
A memorial in honor of her life will be at First Baptist Church in Madison. The visitation will be Monday, April 1st from 5 PM to 8 PM. The service will be held at the church on Tuesday, April 2nd, with visitation from 3 PM- 4 PM and the service at 4PM.

I will forever and ever miss mrs.gables. she was the one teacher that always made math fun and she just made our days interesting and treated us like family. When she first told my class that she had cancer, I was heartbroken but I knew she was strong. I will always know my seat, where you did your tiktoks, where we played Christmas games, and where we just talked. I will have a special place in my heart for you and room 626. I always thought," if I were to have a teacher for a god mother, it would definitely be mrs.gables." I love mrs.gables and I am praying and wishing the best for your family.
