Obituary
Andrew Lorenzo Ferguson was born on January 23, 1968, in Kingston, Jamaica to Mary Crawford and Horace Newton Ferguson, otherwise known as "Glen".
He and his older brother, Christopher Ferguson, were raised in Jamaica by the Ferguson family. He attended Dunrobin Christian Academy and Meadowbrook High School. At Meadowbrook, Andrew was a proud student athlete and was affectionately known to friends and classmates as "Fergie". He distinguished himself in track and field, setting several records and showcasing his exceptional athletic talent.
In 1985, Andrew migrated to Florida, where he lived with his brother, sister Nicole Gaynair and parents, Mary and Patrick Gaynair. In Florida, Andrew's passion for speed found a new home in customizing cars and street racing, which brought him thrill and a sense of belonging. He worked on cars professionally and personally.
Andrew's service to his country began in 1990 when he enlisted in the United States Army. As a Specialist Self-Propelling Turret Mechanic, he served with distinction and was active in Operation Desert Storm. He earned the National Defense Service Medal and the Sharpshooter Badge before being honorably discharged in 1994, although he continued his affiliation with the Reserves.
In August 1995, Andrew married his high school sweetheart, Dalu Douglas. Their family grew with the birth of their first son, Andrew Ferguson II, in 1998, followed by their second son, Dane Ferguson, in 2000. Andrew maintained a loving relationship with his sons, even after his marriage ended. They were a constant source of pride and joy in his life.
In November 1996, he was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, a chronic autoimmune disease that caused his nervous system to progressively deteriorate. He faced his diagnosis with resilience and a determination to make the most of his life despite his declining condition. He was a proud veteran and deeply appreciated the support of the VA in maintaining his independence throughout his battle with MS. He assisted many of his peers in receiving their benefits through his experience with the VA.
He settled in Miami, Florida, in 2013, near the American Airlines Arena, where he enjoyed life as an avid fan of the Heat and the Dolphins. In 2015, he was honored by the Heat's Home Strong Program for his years of service. His Miami home was also shared with his four beloved dogs: Snowball, Socks, Mac, and Jazz. Miami allowed him to enjoy the diverse city life and international cuisine nearby. The city welcomed him with open arms, his animated personality and generosity made him accepted everywhere he went. He enjoyed a broad range of interactions from witty banter to discussions on current events, sports, and technological advancements.
Andrew Lorenzo Ferguson Sr. passed away at the age of 56 in the comfort of his Miami home on Thursday, August 1, 2024. Andrew will be remembered for his generosity and fun-loving spirit. He is survived by his sons, Andrew and Dane, mother, Mary, brother, Christopher, and, sister, Nicole.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to support Multiple Sclerosis research in his memory.
