Andrew Jackson "Jack" Shanks, age 93, of Surgoinsville, passed away on Thursday, December 5, 2024, at Signature Healthcare of Rogersville. Jack was born on July 2, 1931, in Hawkins County to Andrew Jackson, Sr. and Bertha Mae Shanks.
Jack, a lifelong resident of Hawkins County, grew up in Stanley Valley on the family farm where he became an avid farmer, and helped to operate the Shanks Milling Company and Shanks Grocery Store. Later, he was employed for 34 years at AFG until his retirement. He was a member of Big Creek Baptist Church.
Jack found joy riding his tractor, gardening, spending time with family and friends, and cheering on UT sports teams. He will be remembered for his amiable personality, unfailing work ethic, extensive knowledge of farming, his many friendships, and deep devotion to his family. The love of Jack's life was Jean Marie, his beautiful wife of 68 years, Together, they raised six children while maintaining a dairy and tobacco farm. They shared a love for animals, caring for numerous dogs, cats, cattle, and horses over the years. Known for being good stewards of the land, they were always quick to help their neighbors, and welcomed all to their home for hearty meals and fellowship.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Marie (Lawson) Shanks; son, Philip Andrew Shanks; daughter, Teresa Leigh Couch; parents, Andrew Jackson, Sr. and Bertha Mae Shanks; brothers, Bob Shanks, Abner Shanks; and sister, Ann McCoy.
He is survived by daughters, Pamela Patricia and husband, John Thomas White of Gary, TN, Sheila Gay and husband, Kenneth Pelfrey of Surgoinsville, TN, Melissa Dawn and husband, Michael Allen of Surgoinsville; son, Michael Andrew Shanks and wife Patti of Rogersville, TN; daughter-in-law, Barbara Shanks of Surgoinsville, TN; twelve grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; sisters, Mary Ferrell and Dorothy McCoy; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and his loyal Yorkshire Terrier rescue, Callie.
The family of Andrew wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Ms. Sandra Hicks, Ms. Faye Owens, and the staff at HMG of Rogersville for their friendship and excellent care.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm Sunday, December 8, 2024 at Christians-Sells Funeral Home in Rogersville. Funeral services will be held at 4:00 pm with Rev. Stevie Rogers officiating. Graveside service will be held at 11:00 am Monday, December 9, 2024, in Highland Cemetery. Online condolences may be sent at www.christiansells.com.
