Anita Frances Warren always dreamed of being on a Broadway stage, but as she once wrote, her "best roles were wife, mother, teacher and nana."

On August 14, 2025, Anita passed away after a hard-fought battle with cancer that she approached with courage and grace.

Born in February 1951 to Samuel and Adele Weinstein, Anita grew up on Long Avenue in Allston. She attended the prestigious Boston Girl's Latin School and was an excellent student. Her warmth, sense of humor and thousand-watt smile helped her make fast friends with classmates, friendships that she continued to cherish throughout her adulthood. True to her dreams, she also delighted in taking the stage to sing in school musicals and beauty pageants.

Her studies eventually took her across town to Northeastern University. It was there, in an American History class, that she struck up a conversation with Charles Warren. They started sharing class notes and romance soon blossomed. Before long, they were engaged to be married. They were married in 1973 and moved to Marshfield, first to Island Street and then, after spending eight years living in Saudi Arabia, to Ocean Street.

Anita's professional career as a teacher includes three decades of service to the Marshfield Public Schools, where she taught special education and speech pathology, mostly at the elementary school level. She is remembered by students, parents and colleagues for her dedication and compassion for every student she taught. She also treasured the many dear friends she met at work and enjoyed spending time with them inside and outside of school.

A lifelong fan of the Boston Red Sox, she deeply loved her "boys of summer" and she often called Fenway Park her "home away from home." She also enjoyed time spent with Charlie on the family sailboat, playing first mate to her "Captain" and camping out moored under the stars on hot summer nights. Back on land, you could find her searching for sea glass, reading the latest summertime novel on her porch, or working on a jigsaw or crossword puzzle.

Anita was always up for an adventure and she was an experienced traveler. She and Charlie explored the world, from the deserts of Saudi Arabia, to Rome and to Paris. She enjoyed trips to California and Hawaii to celebrate milestone anniversaries, getaways to Key West and Quebec, and an epic vacation in Italy to celebrate her retirement in 2016.

Anita was endlessly proud of her three children, Meredith, Kate, and Josh. She was even prouder of her grandchildren, Poppy, Saul, Hazel, and Bennett. She always made time for them, doting on them patiently, and was always up for endless games of Hangman, homework help, and drawing. She attended- and cried at - every concert, dance recital and sporting event. Nana's house was always decorated to the hilt with the seasonal treasures she loved shopping for at Christmas Tree Shop, and every occasion was marked with a greeting card from Nana, even while she was undergoing treatment.

She may not have made it to Broadway, but Anita was the star of our family – our beloved leading lady. She will be greatly missed.

Family and friends are invited to attend calling hours for Anita, to be held at the Cartmell-Davis Funeral Home (373 Court St, Plymouth) on Sunday, August 17 from 4-7pm. There will be a private graveside service the following day at Mayflower Cemetery in Duxbury.

Charlie, Meredith, Kate, Josh, grandkids and extended family, I am so heartbroken to hear of Anita's passing. As a kid growing up in Allston, Anita [always Needie to me] was my next door neighbor and I looked up to her as my "big sister". She gave me her hand me downs that I loved to wear, we played in the snow & made snowmen, we watched cartoons and silly sit coms together, on hot summer nights we sat on the porch with her parents and talked, she got me a job at Gilchrist [which I didn't last at], and she took me to my first Red Sox game and, thereafter, we would go to games on Sundays and sit in the bleachers. After the game, we would try to get players' autographs in the parking lot. We went to the last game of the 1967 World Series in Boston when the Red Sox lost to the St. Louis Cardinals. Needie was a die hard fan!! The Red Sox were her "Boys of Summer' and she loved going to Fenway Park to see them. She served as a wonderful role model when I saw that she was a good, studious student but also was well rounded with many interests such as reading, baseball, musicals and singing. West Side Story and Fiddler on the Roof were a couple of her favorite musicals and I remember when she sang Cabaret at her Girls' Latin School high school graduation. She helped me to instill in myself a desire to succeed and to work hard. When she started attending Northeastern University, she met a student named 'Charlie' in a history class and they started dating. She and Charlie soon got married and we lost touch with each other when they went to Saudi Arabia & my family moved to West Roxbury and I went to California. Several years ago, Anita found me on Facebook and we reconnected. I enjoyed her posts about her 'Captain' and she was his first mate, their day sails, going to Red Sox games, her children, grandchildren and all of their activities and world travels with Charlie. Anita lived a full life and she so dearly loved her family. In reading the posts from others, she was a gifted teacher who left a lasting impression on her students, their families and coworkers. Anita will be sorely missed by all whom had the pleasure of knowing her. Dear Warren family - Charlie, Meredith, Kate, Josh and your extended family, your loss is so great but may it bring you comfort to know how much Anita [Needie] touched the lives of so many and she will be forever missed. May her memory be a blessing. My sincerest condolences, Luanne Dickey
