Anne-Marie Varda Thenor-Louis, affectionately known as Varda, passed away on May 3, 2025, at the age of 95. Born on December 2, 1929, in Croix-de-Bouquets, Haiti, to Fernande (née Benoit) and Ambroise Thenor-Louis, Varda's life was one marked by love, dedication, and service to her family and community. She passed away peacefully in Middletown, New York, due to multiple organ failure.
Varda grew up in the warmth of a large, caring family alongside her siblings Gisele, Auguste, Wesner, Hubert, Yves, Paulette, and Jean-Claude. In 1947, she united in marriage with Wiener Pierre-Francois; and together they would yield four wonderful children: Marie Joseé Pierre-Francois, Marlene Turnier, Wiener Pierre-François, and Monel Pierre-François. Additionally, Muguette, Nancy, Wesner, and Hervé, also have a special place in her heart as she raised them for a period of time when their parents emigrated to the United States. Varda's life was fortified during a time in Haiti where she survived strife, unexpected upheavals and political turmoil. But through it all, her spirit of perseverance and resilience is what held the family together and maintained continued progression. She emigrated to the United States in the late 1980's. We all owe a debt of gratitude to our dear Varda for her move resulted in continued familial growth and strength.
Her role as a homemaker was one she cherished deeply, pouring her heart into the upbringing of her children and later, her grandchildren. Varda's nurturing spirit extended beyond her immediate family, as she helped raise her grandchildren, Kasey Holland and Garvey Turnier, with the same dedication and affection. Her time and dedication in raising them specifically can be viewed as a personified example of how they assimilated to American life from an immigrant that knew the importance of family and being a contributing member of society. She was a cornerstone of her family, providing a foundation of support and wisdom that will be remembered for generations. Her labouyi was legendary and the tastes of her sweet spoon and many culinary abilities still remain a vivid gustatory memory. Often we forget that it takes a village to raise a family. Varda was a village of her own.
Often times we take for granted the joy that a modest life can yield. However, the fruits of her labor are the living examples we call cousins, uncles, aunts, and ever-growing family. Varda is survived by a legacy of love and joy in the form of her bountiful grandchildren: Darly, Leslie, Wladimir, Wendy, Widjani, Shawn, Nigel, Jowey, Jodi Ann, Nadia, Marlene, Jerry, Neysa, and her cherished great-grandchildren: James Jr., Kaiya, Nielle, Avahna, Onyx, William, Benjamin, Najeem, Avah, Jaden, and many more. Each of them carry a piece of her spirit and teachings in their hearts.
Her life was rich with interests and activities that spoke to her generous heart and love for others. Varda found great joy in visiting her extended family in Brooklyn, New York, where laughter and stories were shared. Her cooking was legendary, a testament to her ability to nourish both body and soul, and her meals brought family and friends together in celebration of her culinary talent.
Varda was committed to her faith, attending church regularly and actively participating in church community activities. Her faith was the compass that guided her through life's challenges and triumphs. She was a beacon of light within her community. Her active community presence served her well. The family knew her to always be helpful in that manner and stood as an example of maternal Haitian strength.
Varda's passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew her, but her memory will be treasured as a blessing. She lived a life full of purpose and love, touching the lives of many through her selfless acts and compassionate spirit. Her influence will be felt for many years to come, as the seeds of goodness she planted continue to flourish in her family and community.
As we bid farewell to Anne-Marie Varda Thenor-Louis, we celebrate a life beautifully lived. Her journey from Croix-de-Bouquets, Haiti, to Middletown, New York, was one filled with love, sacrifice, and grace. She has left behind a tapestry of memories that will be cherished and honored by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Varda's life story is a testament to the enduring power of love and the strength of family bonds and well planted roots. She will be deeply missed, but her legacy will live on, a testament to a life well-lived and a woman well-loved.
