Anna M. Smith

Anna M. Smith, 89, of Salem, NH and longtime resident of Malden, MA, passed away on Thursday, January 8, 2026, at The Residence at Salem Woods. She was born on November 1, 1936, to the late Friedrich Ulrich and Katharina Thumin Augsburg, Germany.

Anna was raised and educated in Germany. She went on to meet her husband Robert Smith, while he was serving as a Military Police Officer with the United States Army, stationed in Germany. Anna eventually moved back to the U.S. with Robert and learned English. Anna went on to raise their three children, and began a long career with the New England Telephone Company. In addition to her own children, Anna was also very involved in the upbringing of her 5 grandsons.

Anna always enjoyed traveling, including back to her home country Germany, but she especially loved traveling in the mountains. Religion always held a special place in Anna's heart, and she was deeply involved in the First Lutheran Church in Malden, MA.

Anna is survived by her son: Michael Smith, and his wife Deborah, of Windham, NH; her grandchildren: Nathan Smith, and his wife Morgan, Daniel Smith, Joseph Mellino, Brian Mellino, and his wife Daniele, and Kyle Mellino; and her great-grandchildren: Jordan, Charlie and Kaelyn.

Per Anna's request, there will be no services at this time. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Anna's name to a charity of your choice.
