It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Anthony D. "Tony" Alteri, a beloved family man, dedicated entrepreneur, and passionate racing enthusiast, who left us on Sunday, February 1, 2026, at the age of 70 following a courageous battle with cancer.
Born on October 19, 1955, in
New Britain, CT, son of the late Anthony and Angelina (Fazzino) Alteri, Tony lived a full life, steeped in the adrenaline and excitement of motorsports. From a young age, Tony immersed himself in the world of racing, learning the intricacies of building engines and fueling his passion for speed. His love for the sport took him on countless adventures across various states and tracks, including all along New England at Stafford Motor Speedway, Thompson Speedway, and Waterford Speedbowl, along with the former tracks, Plainville Stadium and Riverside Park.
For over 40 years, Tony proudly owned and operated T/A Engines, where he became a cornerstone of the racing community. His dedication and expertise helped many racers spanning from Canada to Florida achieve astounding success, contributing to over 1,000 victories. Tony humbly earned many track championship titles with the race teams he was a part of. The racers and teams he worked with were not merely clients; they were his second family, and he cherished the bonds forged through their shared passion.
Though faced with illness the last two years, Tony's spirit remained steady. He dedicated his time to helping others with their automotive challenges, often lending his expertise through phone calls, providing guidance and encouragement whenever he could. His generosity and willingness to assist others reflected the character of a man who derived great joy from sharing his talents.
Throughout Tony's life, he demonstrated fierce love for his family, valuing every instant shared together. He was a constant source of support, never missing a heartwarming milestone, sporting event, or family gathering. Tony had a heart full of adventure, and he was blessed to embark on numerous family vacations, moments that are now treasured memories. Summer days were often filled with laughter and splashes as he hosted beloved family pool parties, ice cream and pizza always welcomed. Tony worked hard throughout his life, but he understood the importance of balance, savoring his downtime with family and friends.
Tony was a lifelong fan of the New York Yankees and the New York Giants. Sundays were sacred, always reserved for football and family, where Tony could be found cheering for his beloved teams, whether they faced triumph or adversity. His bright spirit and infectious sense of humor will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate to know him. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
Tony is survived by his devoted wife of 47 years, Roberta (Towle) Alteri, of Plainville; his cherished daughter, Katie Buttero and her husband, Jared, of South Windsor; and his adored grandchildren, whom he spoiled lovingly with treats and attention, Jordan Buttero, Hunter Buttero and Jaxson Buttero. He was predeceased by his daughter, Beth Alteri.
Family and friends are welcome to gather in celebration of Tony's life on Saturday, February 7, 2026 from 2 to 4 PM at Plainville Funeral Home, 81 Broad Street, Plainville. Words of remembrance will be shared at 4 PM at the funeral home.
