Anthony J. Di Fonzo Sr. 88, passed away peacefully at his daughter's home where he was being cared for, on the evening of March 22, 2023. Mr. Di Fonzo had been in declining health for several years due to age related health conditions.
Mr. Di Fonzo was born at Muhlenberg Hospital in Plainfield, NJ on June 6, 1934. His parents eventually relocated to Wilmington, DE, where his late father, Alexander, would open the original A. Di Fonzo and Sons Bakery.
Mr. Di Fonzo attended Valley Forge Military Academy and Junior College in Wayne, PA, where he excelled and still traveled to Alumni and Homecoming functions, when his health would permit. He was Captain of Company B, a member of the Honor Council, member of the Advisory Council, and Varsity Fencing Team. He also earned the Marksmanship Medal and was the recipient of the Anthony Wayne award multiple times.
Mr. Di Fonzo served in the army and was deployed overseas for 2 years where he served as a member of the 34th Signal Corp and radio teletype operator. He would later return to Wilmington, DE to continue in the family business and eventually become sole proprietor from 1965 until his retirement at age 70 in 2004.
In addition to his family and friends, Mr. Di Fonzo loved horses. He was an avid equestrian who excelled in barrel racing and consistently earned the blue-ribbon competition after competition. His favorite horse's name was Firecracker and they were an undefeatable team.
Mr. Di Fonzo is predeceased in death by his parents, Alexander Di Fonzo and Theresa De Grazia Di Fonzo, his beloved Jersey aunts, uncle and cousin, his eldest daughter Theresa "Terry" Di Fonzo, his younger brothers Arthur Di Fonzo and Alexander Di Fonzo, and his nephew, Daniel "Danny" J Durso.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Angela Durso Di Fonzo, his son Anthony J Di Fonzo II, and his daughter, Danielle Di Fonzo.
