Anthony Edward Marks, a pioneering archaeologist and Professor Emeritus at Southern Methodist University (SMU), died peacefully in his home on August 15, 2025, in Santa Fe, NM. Dr. Marks was renowned for his groundbreaking research on human prehistory in Africa, Europe, and the Near East.
Dr. Marks is survived by his wife of 44 years, Kay Krochman Marks, and his sister, Jean M. Murphy of New York City.
Born in New York City on January 14, 1938, to Herbert E. Marks and Hortense Tyroler Marks, he obtained undergraduate, master's, and doctoral degrees from Columbia University. He joined the faculty of SMU in 1967 and was a distinguished member of the Department of Anthropology.
In 1997, Dr. Marks was awarded an Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Research Award, a prestigious honor given to internationally renowned scholars and scientists in recognition of their career academic achievements. He became Professor Emeritus at SMU in 2005.
Dr. Marks was the author or co-author of over 150 journal articles and other publications regarding prehistoric archaeology, having participated in excavations in areas as diverse as the Sudan, Israel, Portugal, and Ukraine. He produced seminal works on the Middle and Upper Paleolithic periods in these regions. Since 2003, Dr. Marks focused his research activities in the United Arab Emirates and Oman.
