Arlene Faulkner Soong, 67, passed away suddenly on Sunday, October 5, 2025, in Plainfield, NJ. A longtime resident of Winfield Park, Arlene also held a special place in the hearts of many in the Scotch Plains-Fanwood community, where she will be deeply missed.
Arlene had a zest for life and a natural ability to connect with people. Her warm smile and friendly conversations were familiar to many during her years working at QuickChek in Fanwood, and later at the Scotch Plains location on Terrill Road. She was more than just an employee-she became a beloved and recognizable part of the community. Arlene also served as a crossing guard in Westfield and Rahway, always watching over her post with care and kindness.
A woman of many passions, Arlene had a deep appreciation for history and loved re-enacting colonial life. She was an active volunteer at the Miller-Cory House Museum in Westfield, where she spent countless hours cooking over open fires and sharing early American traditions with visitors. She took great pride in hand-sewing her authentic garments, a testament to her dedication and craftsmanship.
Arlene was an avid reader with a lifelong love of books. She enjoyed everything from historical nonfiction to obscure cookbooks, always eager to discover something new. Arlene took great joy in sharing her passion for reading-whether offering book recommendations to friends and family or handing out books to children, even while helping them cross the street. She was a proud supporter of local libraries and believed deeply in spreading the joy of reading to others.
Arlene also had an adventurous side-she enjoyed riding her motorcycle and embraced the freedom of the open road. Her spirit was both grounded in tradition and open to adventure, a rare and beautiful combination.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 22 years, Baden; her brothers Paul and Eric; her sister Denise and brother-in-law Robert; as well as her cherished niece Victoria, and nephews Anthony and Nathan.
A memorial gathering will be held on Sunday, October 12, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, with a sharing of memories at 1:00 PM, at Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Ave, Fanwood, NJ 07023. Cremation was held privately.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Arlene's memory may be made to the Miller-Cory House Museum, the Friends of Fanwood Memorial Library, or Hope 4 Paws Humane Society-all causes close to her heart.
