Arnold Sneed Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Laughlin Service Funeral Home & Crematory - Huntsville on Feb. 28, 2026.
With grace, strength, and a life full of love, Arnold Rankin Sneed, 80, passed away peacefully at home on Friday morning after a courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by the family he loved so deeply and left behind a legacy of integrity, generosity, and steadfast devotion.

Rankin was first and foremost a devoted father to Marydae and Andrew and a beloved husband to Michele for 27 years. Though their marriage later changed form, their partnership endured. They remained family in every way that mattered - united in love, respect, and an unwavering commitment to their children and grandchildren. Together, they created a foundation of security and warmth that shaped the lives of their two children and four cherished grandchildren: Harrison, Frannie, Sarah Collins, and Marylane.

Born in Huntsville, he was the treasured son of AV and Mary Sneed and the precocious younger brother of Jane. He graduated from Butler High School and the University of Alabama. In the spring of 1967, he sailed around the world with Semester at Sea, an experience that would deeply influence the rest of his life. At a time of civil unrest back home, and with little money in his pocket but endless resolve, he boarded the ship and set out to understand the world for himself. His readiness to embrace uncertainty and take bold risks became a hallmark of his character. The voyage expanded his perspective and reinforced a lifelong belief that meaningful things begin with the courage to step forward.

He served in the U.S. Army Reserves, achieving the rank of First Lieutenant and serving as a General's Aide. After graduating from Cumberland School of Law in 1972, he married Michele in 1973 and began a legal career in Huntsville. As an attorney, he touched many lives over the 47 years of his practice, but the highlight of his professional career was the final 20 years, when he served as County Administrator. He was proud to help the probate court maneuver through hundreds of cases as he served our community in this role with the highest level of integrity.

Though he traveled widely, no place was more sacred to Rankin than the farm he and Michele purchased in 1974. It was more than land; it was legacy. It was where children and grandchildren could simply be - exploring, imagining, creating their own adventures. His heart was full when family gathered there, or at the King and Prince along the shores of St. Simons, Georgia.

Rankin was a wonderful storyteller. Whether recounting his travels or inventing characters on the spot, he transformed simple moments into lasting memories. Through his stories and handwritten letters (the real kind with pen & paper), his faithful presence at life's important moments - the wedding, the funeral, the simple lunch - he taught those he loved that showing up is its own form of love.

He gave generously of his time to his community, serving as President of the Huntsville Rotary Club, on the board of the Huntsville Museum of Art, in the choir at First Baptist Church, and with the OWLS (Old Wise Lawyers Society), to name a few. For all the "roles" he played in our community, none were more important to him than those he played on stage in local community theater productions over the course of forty years. Personal highlights included portraying Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird and what he felt to be the great honor of bringing Ebenezer Scrooge to life for seventeen cherished seasons in Fantasy Playhouse's annual production of A Christmas Carol.

Rankin was preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his sister, Jane Sneed Lynn of Atlanta, Georgia; Michele Buchanan Sneed; their children, Marydae Blank (Ben) and Andrew Sneed (Bethany Harrison Sneed); four grandchildren, Virginia Harrison Sneed, Frances Goodloe Sneed, Sarah Collins Blank, and Marylane Rutland Sneed; treasured extended family; and quite possibly his biggest fan, his Labrador, Captain.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, March 6th, 2026 at The Church of Nativity. A reception will be held in Ridley Hall following the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to an organization of your choice, Fantasy Playhouse, Independent Music Production (IMP), Semester at Sea, First Baptist Church of Huntsville, or Church of the Nativity.
