Arthur Bensen Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc. - Middletown on Jan. 3, 2026.
Arthur L. Bensen, who is affectionately known as Artie to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on January 1, 2026, in Pleasant Valley, NY at the age of 83.
He was born on September 16, 1942, in the heart of Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. Artie's zest for life and unwavering spirit were evident from his early days.Artie was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Dorothy (Perlett), with whom he shared a beautiful journey of 61 years sharing endless memorable moments. Together, they created a legacy of love, laughter, and family values that will live on through their children and grandchildren.
Artie was a loving father to his daughter, Dawn, and her husband, John, as well as his son, Tommy, and his wife, Linda. His role as a grandfather was one he cherished deeply, always having a story or a joke to share with his six grandchildren, Alexandra, Dylan, Becky, Melanie, Cole, and Hayley.
Educated at Fort Hamilton High School in Brooklyn, Artie was a man who valued hard work and dedication. He spent 30 years as a skilled carpenter at Abraham & Strauss in downtown Brooklyn, where his craftsmanship and attention to detail were greatly admired by his colleagues and clients alike. His commitment to his craft was matched only by his involvement in his community, where he was a respected member of the Duallers Hot Rod Club and the Just 12 Fishing Club. Artie's interests and hobbies painted the picture of a man who loved life and knew how to enjoy it. He spent many summers as a young boy at Candlewood Lake in Connecticut, in a childhood lake house that his father had built. His passion for cars was evident in his meticulous care of his 1987 El Camino, which he loved to cruise around in and work on endlessly to keep it in pristine condition. Artie's main passion however, was his love for the NY Giants. No matter how good or bad of a season they were having, he always had those Giants on the big screen.
Artie also possessed a creative soul, which he expressed through the specialized art of making stained glass-a hobby that reflected his ability to find beauty in the simplest of things. One of his favorite daily enjoyments was to watch the Price is Right while enjoying his lunch, while also yelling at the TV for people going one dollar over the previous contestant. Those who knew Artie will remember him as a loving, funny, and creative individual. His ability to light up a room with his humor and his knack for storytelling made him a cherished presence in the lives of many. His warmth and generosity of spirit were the hallmarks of a life well-lived, and his impact on those he loved will endure.
Artie's life was a testament to the power of love, laughter, and creativity. He has left a never-ending impression to remember by being a phenomenal husband, father and grandfather, and most importantly, a lifelong best friend. He has left us all with an endless list of memories that will be cherished and celebrated by all who were fortunate enough to know him. Though he may be gone, Artie's legacy will continue to inspire and comfort his family and friends for generations to come. May he forever be remembered as one of the warmest souls, and greatest loved one in our hearts. May Arthur live on forever through us all.

So so sorry to hear about Benny's passing. My sincere condolences to his children, grandchildren, other relatives and friends. Every month for many years our little group of four couples would meet for dinner at one of the couple's houses. The food was always excellent and the camraderie was outstanding. Belly-laughs abounded and Benny always had a few funny or otherwise interesting stories to tell. The one I remember the most was about one of Benny's friends who, whenenever he went back and forth from Brooklyn to Staten Island over the Verrazzano Narrows Bridge, hid in the trunk until the driver got to the otherside. As the story was told over and over, as expected, variants of this story evolved. Incidentally, Benny made it quite clear that he had permission from the hidden person to tell the story. This story also led to some of us revealing our "gotchas" too and the laughs never stopped.
