Arthur B Lander, Jr., 75, passed away surrounded by family on Friday, Sept. 19, 2025 at Baptist Hospital in Louisville.
"Art" as he was affectionately known, was a passionate outdoors enthusiast and an award-winning journalist in the field for over 53 years. He graduated from Western Kentucky University and worked for Ky Tourism, The Ky Derby Festival, and Kentucky Fish and Wildlife. He worked for Lexington's Herald Leader newspaper as their outdoor columnist for 22 years. He was also well known for this in-depth coverage of the Kentucky Derby.
Upon retirement he wrote for The Kentucky Tribune, covering various topics.
A tribute to his passion and knowledge, Art wrote and published 4 books, three of which are quintessential guides to Kentucky's waterways and hiking areas. He was also a respected photographer, having his photos published in various publications.
Art was a devoted sports fan whose favorite activity was grilling out and listening to the Reds and Bengals on the radio every chance he had.
He will be remembered for his warm, kind nature, infectious laugh, wicked sense of humor, and devotion to his family.
He is preceded in death by his parents Eugenia and Arthur Lander Sr. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Bonnie Lander and their three children, Laura (Brian), John (Morgan) and Maggie, and four grandchildren, James, Charlotte, and Thomas Powers and Mia Lander.
Visitation is Thursday, Sept. 25 at Pearson Funeral Home, 149 Breckinridge Lane, Louisville from 4-6pm followed by a private burial Friday.
