Arthur Lee Lewis
March 9, 1939 – August 15, 2025
Arthur Lee Lewis was born on March 9, 1939, to the late Oscar Cross and the late Louise Beth Lewis. He peacefully fell asleep in death on Friday, August 15, 2025.
Affectionately known as Artie or Graddy, depending on which family member you spoke with, Arthur moved from Albany, Georgia, to Newark, New Jersey, at the age of 12. He attended school in the Newark Public School system.
As a young man, Artie sang with a group of friends outside the window of Rona, the young woman who would become the love of his life. His songs won her heart, and they were married in 1960. From their union came four children: Kevin Lamont Lewis, Kenneth Raynard Lewis, Kristopher Arthur Lewis, and Kimberly Lizette Greene.
In 1964, Arthur and Rona dedicated their lives to Jehovah. He served faithfully as an elder, showing zeal in the ministry and a deep love for studying the Bible. Always willing to help, Arthur encouraged and supported family, friends, and congregation members alike. Even up until his passing, he joyfully spoke with relatives and loved ones about Jehovah and His promises for the future.
Arthur worked hard as a truck driver to provide for his family. In addition to his dedication to spiritual matters, he was a man who loved music-singing, playing the keyboard and guitar, and enjoying "oldies but goodies." He treasured time with his family, whether playing cards, reminiscing about the "good ole times," or simply sharing laughter. He also found joy in life's simpler pleasures, deep sea fishing, watching westerns, horseback riding, and especially spoiling his grandchildren. Arthur often spoke lovingly of his mother and fondly remembered the precious moments he shared with the love of his life, Rona.
Arthur was the eldest of 22 siblings, many of whom preceded him in death. He will be deeply missed by his surviving siblings, Sisters Cate Mims and Mary Carr, and Brother Walter-B. Cross.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Oscar Cross and Louise Lewis; his beloved wife, Rona Lewis; his in-laws, Jessie Williams Sr. and Anna Williams; his brothers-in-law, Jessie Williams Jr., Warren Williams Sr., and Luther Hargrove; his sisters-in-law, Annette Hargrove, Aleathea Williams, and Darlene Williams; and his grandson, Terrell Maurice Butler.
He leaves to cherish his memory his four children: Kevin, Kenneth (Trene), Kristopher (Roxanne), and Kim (Derrick); his brother and sister-in-law, Clayton and Sandra Williams; nine grandchildren: Christopher (Patrice), Tasia (Shalon), Stephan, Michael, Kia (Joe), Chardae, Charniece, Darren (Tynesha), and Destiny; six great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will miss him dearly.
Arthur's life was one of faith, family, and song. His legacy of love and devotion will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
