Arthur "Art" R. Mayers, 86, of Gladstone, passed away Tuesday morning January 6, 2026 at OSF St. Francis Hospital.
Art was born in Osceola, MI on February 27, 1939, son to Michael and Ruth (Brokenshire) Mayers. He was raised in Tamarack Hills and graduated from Dollar Bay High School in 1958.
He joined the US Army in 1962. While serving, he earned the rank of Specialist 4-Technician and earned the Good Conduct medal. Art was honorably discharged in December of 1964.
On August 22, 1973, Art married the former Mary Margaret Gallagher in Calumet. They raised two children, John Paul Smith and Michael Mayers and were able to share over 52 years together.
Art worked for Harnischfeger for two years then transitioned to the former Mead Paper Corporation as a millwright. He continued to work at the mill until his retirement in 2004.
As a young man, Art enjoyed golfing and bowling. He was a lifetime member of the AmVets. After retirement, he enjoyed gardening and watching the Detroit Tigers, Lion, and Red Wings. Above all he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandkids. And he was always the first to take a picture with Grandma's Famous Texas Sheet cake.
Among survivors include his wife, Mary; children, John Paul Smith of Oshkosh, WI and Michael Mayers of Gladstone; grandchildren, Arianna, Marissa (Michael), Alexis, Madalyn, and Brendan; great-grandchild, Jack; and several nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents, Art is preceded in death by siblings, Lillian, Ruth, Dorothy, Barbara, and Clifford.
