Arthur C. Michels

Arthur C. Michels, 94, of Wheeler, Illinois, passed away on September 29, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.

Arthur was born November 1, 1930, in Chicago, Illinois to Clemens and Edith (Garwood) Michels. He married Florence Koester on June 28, 1958, in Effingham, IL and she preceded him in death on January 26, 2019.

Arthur proudly served in the United States Army as a Military Policeman during the Korean conflict and when his service ended in 1953, he went home to farm. He believed in trying new innovations in hopes of improving farming practices for land conservation and productivity. He practiced conservation of natural resources and promoted wildlife habitats on his farmland earning the 1974 Jasper County Conservation Farm Family of the Year. During that timeframe Arthur also fulfilled his dream of becoming a licensed airplane pilot. He always enjoyed traveling whether to visit family or to see new sights. In his later years, Arthur's focus turned to providing better educational opportunities for youth in underserved areas of the United States and Guatemala. He also supported other causes dear to his heart, including Catholic Charities, Family Life Center and children's hospitals.

Arthur is survived by four children, Kathy Zwilling, Olney, Illinois; Sandy Michels, Wheeler, Illinois; Karen (Tim) Oliver, Verrado, Arizona; and Keith (Kristine) Michels, Wheeler, Illinois; four grandchildren, Nicholas Zwilling, Dana Michels, Aaron Michels, and Sara Michels; and one sister, Norma Greuel.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two sons, Dale and Douglas Michels; one brother, Roy Michels; and son-in-law, Joseph Zwilling.

A private family Mass was held on Thursday, October 2, 2025 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Effingham, IL. Burial was in St. Anthony Cemetery in Effingham, IL with military rites. Johnson Funeral Home in Effingham is assisting the family.
