Arthur Rosen Obituary
Arthur D. Rosen, M.D., a distinguished clinical neurologist, scientist, and professor, passed away at the age of 89. Over more than six decades, he devoted his career to advancing the field of neurology through clinical service, education, and research.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Dr. Rosen earned his B.A. with Honors in Chemistry from Columbia College in 1956 and his M.D. from SUNY Downstate Medical Center in 1960. Following residency training at Kings County Hospital, he served as a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy Reserve Medical Corps and led the Neurology service at the U.S. Naval Hospital, St. Albans.
Subsequently, he embarked on an academic career that combined patient care, scientific discovery, and the training of future physicians. At the State University of New York at Stony Brook University Hospital, he was the Director of the Division of Neurology (1973-1979) and established and directed the Neurology Residency Program (1976-1989), shaping the training of countless neurologists. Dr. Rosen rose through the academic ranks to become Professor of Neurology in 1980. He also served as Director of Clinical Neurophysiology and was deeply committed to patient care at University Hospital and affiliated institutions.
Dr. Rosen was a gifted and intuitive clinical neurologist, whose diagnostic acumen was matched by his compassion at the bedside. He had an extraordinary ability to listen carefully to patients, discerning subtle details that guided accurate diagnoses and effective care. His gentle manner, warmth, and empathy put patients and families at ease, even in the most difficult moments. To generations of residents and students who accompanied him on hospital rounds, he modeled not only clinical excellence but also the human side of medicine, showing that true healing requires both knowledge and kindness.
In his later career, Dr. Rosen devoted over two decades to clinical service in Greater Lafayette, Indiana, at the Purdue University Student Health Service, Unity Healthcare, and at Franciscan Health in Lafayette, Indiana before retiring in 2020. There, he served as Director of Neurology, Medical Director of the Stroke Program, and Attending Neurologist, caring for countless patients and families with dedication and compassion. He was instrumental in strengthening neurology and stroke care within the community, bringing the highest standards of academic medicine to a regional hospital setting. Colleagues remember him as a generous collaborator, a trusted leader, and a physician who always placed patients' needs at the center of his work.
In 1998, Dr. Rosen was appointed Professor of Biological Sciences at Purdue University and Professor of Clinical Neurology at the Indiana University School of Medicine. He later served as Course Director in Physiology and, as Master Clinician in Residence, guided medical students and residents in their professional and personal development. In recognition of his lifelong devotion to teaching, he was named Distinguished Statewide Educator in Neurology in 2021.
As both a clinician and professor, Dr. Rosen was widely respected for his research on epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, and on the effects of magnetic fields on biological systems. His prolific contributions spanned neurology, neuroscience, and biophysics, with publications that continue to inform the field.
Beyond his academic and clinical accomplishments, Dr. Rosen is remembered most warmly as a mentor. He generously shared his wisdom with students, residents, and colleagues, inspiring them with his intellectual curiosity, clinical skill, and compassion for patients.
Arthur was preceded in death by his parents, Elihu and Gertrude (Simonson) Rosen, and by his first wife, Deborah (Mandelberg) Rosen. He is survived by his devoted wife, Patricia (Dailey) Rosen; his daughter, Jody Taylor (Michael) of Walpole, MA; his son, Matthew Rosen (Darrah Bowden) of Somerville, MA; and his beloved grandchildren, Julie, Kyle, and Julian. He is survived by a sister, Virginia Barnett of Pearl River, NY and a niece and nephew. His legacy lives on in the thousands of patients he cared for and their families, the doctors and nurses with whom he worked side by side, the many neurologists, scientists, and medical students he trained, and the lasting influence of his research and teaching.
