Arthur 'Art' Smith, a long-time Beacon resident, passed away at the age of 80 on June 26, 2022, in Poughkeepsie, NY. Born in Freeport, NY in 1941 to the late Wilfred and Evelyn Smith, Art was a beloved teacher, coach, father, husband, cousin, and friend.
Art was especially proud of his service in the United States Marine Corps from 1959-1965. He served in Vietnam, and later attended the Defense Language Institute and served as a translator in Korea.
Art was a gifted athlete whose passion in life was sports. He once played Minor League Baseball, was a life-long hockey player, and could shoot his age in golf. However, his greatest accomplishment was his long and successful coaching career, most notably as Head Baseball Coach at Marist College and at Dutchess Community College, where he led DCC to its first and only appearance at the NJCAA World Series, in 1990.
Art taught health and physical education in Marlboro Central Schools and at Dutchess Community College for over 35 years. Prior to that, he briefly taught and coached in Beacon City Schools.
Art is survived by his three children: Yvonne Brandon (Smith), Brandon Smith, and Hannah Michelle Smith; his spouse Susan Steinberg Smith, his first wife Eve Brandon, and one grandchild, Marcus Afrashteh.
Services will be held on Saturday, July 2, 2022, from 4-7pm at Libby Funeral Home, 55 Teller Ave, Beacon, with Prayer Service and Military Honors rendered by the United States Marine Corps Honor Guard at 6pm.

Art Smith was a truly great American. It was my honor to know him, and to play golf with him. His smile, competitive nature, and genuine kindness will be truly missed. We lost a wonderful gentleman in Art Smith.

To the family of Coach Smith......my deepest sympathies on the loss of a great individual. I had the pleasure of experiencing and meeting Art in the late 1970s at Dutchess CC as he began his collegiate coaching journey. I was a snot-nosed kid who had a passion for baseball and "The Coach" taught me how to excel on the field along with respecting the game we both loved. I used to kid him that he was half my size but he kept reminding me that I shouldn't judge the man by his height, rather by the size of his heart. He was a fiery competitor who hated to lose. I would dread those long bus trips home from games that we lost. I was honored that he had confidence in me his first year at Dutchess to appoint me the captain of the baseball team. I hope that, over 40 years later, he's looking down at me and I made him proud. The characteristics and traits he taught me have followed me through my life's journey as a husband, father and grandfather. In addition, they have helped to sustain me throughout my 40+ year career in the fire service with the FDNY. I share in your loss. Thank you for sharing him with me.
