Mr. Arthur Mark Smith, age 67, of Thomaston, died Monday, January 8, 2024, at his residence. The family will receive friends at Fletcher-Day Funeral Home on Friday evening, January 19, from 7:00 until 9:00 PM.
"Mark" as he was affectionately known, was a lifelong resident of Thomaston. He was born on August 9, 1956, a son of the late Arthur Jerome Smith and the late Mary Jean Miles Gilbert. Mark met Cynthia Ellen "Cindy" Glover in the summer of 1978, and they were married 4 months later on October 27, 1978.
Mark had an entrepreneurial spirit, having owned and operated Tire Master of Zebulon for over 20 years. Upon selling Tire Master, he joined Cindy at H&R Block of Barnesville. Together, they expanded their franchises to Zebulon and Jackson, and Mark continued to operate all 3 franchises after Cindy passed away in 2010.
Mark was an avid reader, historian and seeker of knowledge. He enjoyed being outdoors – whether it was hunting, fishing, or spending time near any body of water – rivers, lakes or the ocean. He could make anything an adventure. He always felt a special connection with Alaska and had the opportunity to visit multiple times in his lifetime.
Mark is survived by his wife, Jan Perry Smith of Thomaston, his daughter, Stephanie (Jack) Martin of Tulsa, Oklahoma, a sister, Amy Diane Smith Street, brother, Troy Jerome Smith, stepfather, John M. Gilbert of Barnesville, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and his first wife, he was preceded in death by his sister, Laura Jean Smith Pritchett.
