Arthur Stephenson Obituary

Published by Sands Funeral Chapel Cremation and Reception Centre (Nanaimo) from Oct. 26 to Oct. 28, 2013.
Surrounded by his family, Jack passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 23. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Doris, and leaves to mourn his passing, his daughter, Sharon Catto (Allan) and his son, Don (Sharron). He also leaves three grandchildren, Leslie Hanika (Tim), Michael Catto (Cyndi), Brooke Stephenson-Servano (Hector), and three great-grandchildren, Jack, Leigh, and Armando.

He is survived by four sisters and one brother and numerous nieces and nephews across Canada and the U.S.

Jack was born and raised in Victoria, Carbonear, Nfld., the second oldest of ten children. During the depression era, as the eldest son , he left school at age sixteen to help on the family homestead raising food and working in the family sawmill. In 1938, he left home and moved to Montreal, where he worked for Canada Packers. In 1939, he enlisted in the Victoria Rifles and served in the Army for five years, attaining the rank of Sergeant, and serving in both England and Canada during WWII. He met and married Doris Andrews in1942, while stationed in Nanaimo.

After the war, in 1945, he returned to Nanaimo and began a fourteen year career in construction, eventually becoming a superintendent of construction for many island buildings. By 1961, he became the construction and maintenance supervisor for Nanaimo Parks and Recreation, where he was responsible for the design, construction, and maintenance of local parks and recreation facilities.

Throughout his life, Dad loved music, reading, and poetry. He played baritone horn and sousaphone in the army band and was a member of the Nanaimo Concert Band for forty years. He was a devoted member of St. Andrew's United Church, serving on the board and singing in the choir.

There will be a service of remembrance at Sands Funeral Home, #1 Newcastle Ave. , at 11.00 A.M. on Wednesday, Oct. 30. Private internment to follow at Cedar Memorial Gardens.

The family would like to thank Dr. Nicholaas Janssen and the staff of the Dwelling Place Care Facility for their dedication and attentive care.

Dear cousins, Don & Sharon and Families,
We were indeed saddened to learn of our beloved Uncle Jack's passing. Although the many miles between us prevented frequent visits, we were always excited when we learned Uncle Jack was coming east. What I remember most of Uncle Jack was the twinkle in his eye when he was in the middle of a joke or otherwise humorous line. I believe his sense of humour served him well in life. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.

Dear Cousins, Don, Sharon and Families.
I was sorry to hear of Uncle Jacks passing. I always enjoyed seeing him when he came home for a visit. He always had a great sense of humour and a laugh. He always reminded me of Pop Stephenson and looking at his picture right now, you can really see the resemblance. His smile was a happy smile and he loved to laugh. I am sure he will be greatly missed. Take care of yourselves and your families. We are thinking of all of you here at this sad time. Bye for now. Gary Dawe

Dear Sharon, Don, and families,

Karla and I send our deepest condolences. Uncle Jack was a thoughtful and kind person with a wonderful sense of humour. We cherish our memories of times spent together in Newfoundland and Nanaimo.

I have very fond memories of Uncle Jack from my families visit there when I was 14. He had a great heart and a great sense of humour. I often think back to moments with him from that visit that almost thirty years later still make me smile...

Sharon, Don and families: May God's peace and good memories of your dad comfort you in your sorrow and loss. I sorrow with you.

Our family has such good memories of Uncle Jack when we visited there and when he and Aunt Doris visited us in Ontario. He was always making us laugh. I still treasure a bowl and a card table he made for Mom & Dad years ago.
