Professor Asmelash Ogbasion Gebremedhin, son of Ogbasion Gebremedhin and Sebene Fessehaye, was born on July 19, 1940 in the small East African country of Eritrea. In 1971, he emigrated to the United States and attended Jackson State University where he studied finance and established a life-long career in accounting. Ash, as he was known by many of his colleagues, was an avid learner which lead him to his passion in academia until retirement in 2012. He was a family man and a man of god. Asmelash was known for his humility, his infectious laugh, his famous dance moves and his unwavering love for his family and friends around the world.
Asmelash was summoned by our Lord on March 12, 2024. He is survived by his wife of 39 years Asmeret Tesfaye Ogbasion, his son Felemay, his daughter Heyab, his daughter-in-law Nikki, his grandchildren Maya and Emmett, his son-in-law Otman, his sister Abrihet, his brother Abraham and many loving cousins, nieces and nephews. He will be missed.

Papa Ash as my kids calls him, was, a great person. His laughs jokes and his dances are unforgettable. Asmelash was a Godfather of my husband and I feel special bond to him. My family and I used to go to Memphis every Thanksgiving to celebrate with him and his family. And that was a good old time! I know he is with Jesus Rest In Peace and sincere condolence to the entire Ogbasion family. Love Tegi
