Athlyn Thigpen Boswell passed away at her home in Shreveport, Louisiana on Friday, September 12, 2025, at the age of 101 years, 6 months, and one day. She was the loving daughter of Julian Taylor and Mary Ricks Thigpen, born in Mansfield, Louisiana on February 11, 1924. Being the only child, she was the pride and joy of her parents.
Although she was an only child, she had plenty of Ricks' cousins to play with and have adventures. She and cousin, Jean Ricks Driver, especially, had lots of fun on horseback. In later life that adventureness led to her and Jean traveling the world together.
She graduated from Mansfield High School and attended Northwestern State where she was a Freshman Beauty. While attending Northwestern she met Jimmy (James E. Boswell), whom she later married in 1943. After a stint in Chicago, where Jimmy was serving in the U.S. Navy, they returned to Shreveport, where they lived out their lives. Athlyn became known as "the cake lady", as she loved to make cakes for friends and family, and everyone loved being the recipient of one of those delicious cakes.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 62 years, Jimmy E. Boswell her youngest son; Rodney Payne Boswell and many cousins and friends.
She is survived by her son James T. Boswell and wife Nancy, of Montgomery, TX. She was "B" to her three grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Emily Holliday and husband Jerry of Montgomery, TX, Brannon Boswell of Richmond, TX and Andy Boswell and wife, Amanda of Richmond, TX; five great-grandchildren, Ashlyn and Bree Holliday of Montgomery, TX, Tyler Holliday and wife, Madison of College Station, TX, and M.J. and Luke Boswell of Richmond, TX, some cousins, and special friend, Cuc Tran. Cuc has been a wonderful friend to Athlyn for many years. We appreciate everything you did with her and for her, we also want to thank all the ladies that helped take care of Athlyn these last several months, we appreciate all you did for her.
