Audrey K. Laffey, a cherished mother, devoted wife, beloved sister, and doting grandmother, was born on November 10, 1947, in Wheeling, West Virginia. She graced this world with her kindness and warmth until her passing on November 13, 2025, following a long and courageous battle with lung disease.
Audrey dedicated herself to a rewarding career as a nursing assistant for an impressive fifty years, serving at various institutions including OVMC and Peterson, and even extending her compassion to locales down south. Her unwavering commitment to caring for others exemplified her selflessness and nurturing spirit. She was a proud advocate for the YWCA, embodying her belief in community service and empowerment.
An alumna of Wheeling Central Catholic High School, Audrey carried forward the values of hard work and dedication throughout her life. Her character shone through in every interaction; she was known for her kind and welcoming demeanor, making those around her feel cherished and important.
Audrey reveled in the simple pleasures of life. She had a profound love for the beach, where she often found solace amidst the rhythmic serenade of the waves. Her admiration for lighthouses symbolized her guiding light within her family and community. As a avid fan of the Steelers, her enthusiasm for sports was matched only by her affection for her beloved dogs, particularly Fifi, whose companionship brought comfort and joy to her life.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 44 years, Martin Thomas Laffey, who stood by her side through life's journey. Their union, marked by love and respect, was a testament to enduring partnership. Audrey is also survived by her two children: Ryan James Laffey of Wheeling, Ashley Nicole (Don Smith) Laffey of Smithfield, and her treasured grandchild, Brighton James Smith. The love she instilled in her family will forever be a part of their legacy. Additionally, she leaves behind two devoted sisters, Theresa Comer of Wheeling, and Debbie (Gary) Schuetz, whose bonds have grown ever stronger in the wake of their loss.
Audrey was preceded in death by her parents, Auldin and Mary Cathrine (Brant) Smith, and one sister, Mary Margaret Latz. The void left by the passing of her two cherished dogs, Fifi and Tiffany, echoes the love she had for all living beings.
In honor of her memory, visitation will take place on November 17, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 6:00 PM with Monsignor Chidiac Bakhos celebrate at Schuetz Funeral Home located at 4719 Jacob St., Wheeling, WV.
