Barbara Carothers Obituary

Carothers, Barbara Eckstein

89, of Seminole, Florida, passed away peacefully at home on August 3, 2025. She was born on August 31, 1935, in Oak Park, Illinois, the daughter of the late Joseph and Madelyn Eckstein. She graduated from Grinnell College, where she met Robert A. Carothers. In 1959, they were married. Bob predeceased her in 2000. Barbara was a beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother. She held two Master's degrees, one in Elementary Education and one in Library Science. After her children were in school, Barbara taught elementary school for many years. She enjoyed instilling a love of learning in her students. She was an avid traveler and cruiser. She loved family trips to Europe, the Caribbean and anywhere else her grandsons wanted to visit. She also enjoyed playing bridge, reading and spending time with family and friends. Barbara is survived by her children, Susan (Tom Smith) and Robert (Linda) Carothers; grandsons, Lee (Virginia) Hanna and Robert Carothers; great-grandchildren, Abigail and Lee David Hanna; brother, Merrill Eckstein (Wanda); sister-in-law, Bette Jean Lutz, as well as many other close family members. Family and friends are invited to the Pass-A-Grille Beach Community Church on Saturday, August 23, for a celebration of life at 11 am, immediately followed by a luncheon reception at Lake Seminole Square in Seminole, Florida. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Canterbury School of Florida Library Fund, St Petersburg FL. Barbara's family would like to thank the various care givers who took care of her during the final months of her life.
