SALEM – Mrs. Barbara Ann (Vent) Doherty, 89 of Salem and the loving wife of the late Daniel Joseph Doherty, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 1st in the comfort of her home, with her family by her side.
Born in Marblehead, Barbara was the daughter of the late Frederick and Carrie (Russell) Vent. She was raised and educated in Marblehead, graduating from Marblehead High School in 1954. Barbara continued her education at secretarial school before embarking on her professional career.
A dedicated professional, Barbara spent her working career at the Massachusetts Unemployment Office in Salem and later in Boston. As a working mother, she balanced her job with her commitment to education, tirelessly working towards earning her bachelor's degree while raising her family. Her journey culminated in a retirement marked by years of service, symbolized her dedication to helping others during their times of need.
Beyond her professional life, Barbara was a gifted knitter, renowned for her ability to create beloved sweaters, mittens, and hats for family and friends. Her generosity knew no bounds, as she often collaborated with friends at the senior center to donate her handcrafted pieces, always thinking of others first. Barbara loved long walks and cherished every moment spent in Marblehead, her beloved community. She was an avid baker and was known around the neighborhood for her blueberry cake and whoopie pies.
Above all, Barbara was a devoted mother and grandmother, who radiated love and support for her family. Her selflessness and warmth touched the lives of everyone around her, and she will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Barbara is survived by her children, Ellen Belleville and her husband, Kevin of Lynn, Daniel Doherty of Salem, Kelly Rouleau and her husband, David of Danvers, Michael Doherty and his wife, Laurie of Salem, Kerry Fontaine and her husband, Jim of Sandown, NH, Leanne Mattson and her wife, Donna of Laconia, NH and Darcy Doherty of
Salem, MA and Laconia, NH; her beloved 12 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, sister, Mary Williams of Marblehead and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her beloved husband, Daniel, Barbara was predeceased by her parents and sister, Sue Graves.
