It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother and grandmother Barbara Housworth Hurndon. She left us peacefully on 03/09/2025 at the age of 95. A woman of great warmth, kindness, and strength, she touched the lives of everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. She was married to the love of her life, Lloyd, 57 years. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother caring for those she loved all her life and making countless memories. She had a unique gift for making everyone feel loved, understood and supported.
Born on January 18, 1930, at Grady hospital in Atlanta, her life was a testament to selflessness, compassion, and a deep commitment to those she loved.
She had a remarkable 43-year career with the Bell System, taking on many roles and impacting so many around her. After retiring from the Bell System, she took on a new role for 18 years, caring for the babies and all the young children at her cherished lifelong church. She loved those babies as her own and had the privilege of watching them grow into young adults. Her work there was a true reflection of her compassionate nature, and she touched the lives of so many with her kindness and patience. Her commitment to those she cared for was true testament to the love she had for others, always putting their needs before her own.
One of her greatest joys in life was her lifelong commitment to animal rescue. Her heart was always open to creatures that others might overlook, and she spent her life rescuing, rehabilitating and giving a second chance to countless animals. Whether it was a stray dog or neglected cat she was there patiently providing comfort, care and a safe haven for those who needed it most. She worked with numerous animal shelters, rescue organizations and her own personal efforts. She believed that every life, no matter how small or damaged, was worth saving and she worked tirelessly to make that belief a reality. Her home was always a sanctuary filled with animals that went from broken to thriving.
She faced each challenge with courage and grace, and her faith and spirit remain a source of inspiration.
She is survived by her daughter Phyllis McKeller (Huey McKeller), granddaughter Amber Marchman (Keith Marchman) and two great granddaughters Hannah Marchman and Kayla Marchman and numerous other family and cousins. Her legacy lives on in the generations she nurtured and in the many lives she touched with her love.
A memorial service will be held at 3pm March 23, 2025, at Smyrna Presbyterian Church 2920 Highway 212 SW, Conyers GA 30094, where we will celebrate her life and the profound impact, she had on all of us. We will have a brief visitation at 2pm prior to service and a reception following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to any local animal shelter.
We will miss her more than words can express, but we take comfort in knowing that her love will live on in our hearts forever.
